Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to ship my wedding dress in advance a few weeks before I cross the border on my K1 Visa. I was trying to save space with the amount of stuff I have to take on the plane. However I am worried that if I ship by Fed Ex ahead of time that it may get held as I was under the impression my goods couldn't cross the border before I did or is there an exception being that it is one dress? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't see why it would be a problem - you're shipping a dress to your fiance...you could just as easily be sending him pants and a shirt.

I imagine it would be dutiable, but I can't say that for sure. I doubt they would hold it- they won't know you're getting ready to cross on a K-1. Worst case scenario, they'll open the box, inspect the contents, and then charge duty. I've had this happen before. If they assign duty after shipment, the Fed Ex man will just make you pay before he hands you the box.

I would be more concerned with it being damaged or even lost during shipment. If you have a big fluffy dress, you would need a big box, and it would be heavy too. Big and heavy means expensive to ship.
