Remember all those billions of dollars being allocated from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to development of high speed rail around the country? Turns out post November elections several incoming governors didn’t want the funding for various reasons, telling the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) effectively to shove it. Well, the DOT has heard Wisconsin and Ohio loud and clear, yanking this week $1.195 billion and offering it to other states.

...

Those other states benefiting from Wisconsin and Ohio include, in order of most funding first, California, Florida, Washington, Illinois, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Missouri, Wisconsin (for an Amtrak line), Oregon, North Carolina, Iowa and Indiana.

Projects being developed under the $8 billion+ project will require rail manufacturers and suppliers to be committed to not only locating in the U.S., but to ensuring high-speed rail projects are built by American workers with American-made supplies.

So without WI and OH, the only places we can get to from IL will be IN, MO and IA. Blah. Who wants to go there?

Well, at least the money taken away from WI will be given back to WI (for an Amtrak line). Whatever that means....

Where's NJ?

West of NY, east of PA. You might wanna check a map. :P

Thanks, I always get lost in NJ. I have a GPS - maps don't help :P

You're not the only New Yorker who can't figure his or her way around Jersey. I know a few who have lived here for years and still get lost amid the maze of circular ramps that leave you right where you started and northbound highways that go south and southbound that go north and, of course, our jug handles.

i thought our bridges were in grave disrepair. i guess only for 1 week after one falls to the ground. just saying, money could be better allocated if bridge really are crumbling.

Almost every bridge around me (crossings over the raritan river) has undergone repairs this summer with stimulus money.

The HSR funding is separate.

separate like when the vehicle tax and gasoline tax revenue in CA went to anything they wanted to redirect it to.
