My friend Chuck - talking about the big "D" even before these folks are married?

I guess that depends on whether Julian will kill her figuratively or literally...

Just re-apply for the SSN on or after January 10 and follow the AOS guides.

God, can we get him deported? It's attitudes and behaviours like this that give entire nations a bad reputation. He's going to need to get over his entitled, elitist attitude PDQ if he thinks he's going to get anywhere with it in the US. For his own sanity and for the sake of the entire British population.

Having said all that, there's plenty of people who are going to be terrified he's Harry Potter's distant cousin, of the Slytherin persuasion, and comply with his foot-stomping for fear of having Crucio cast upon them...

Being impatient/showing annoyance or frustration will not help the process along

(given the talent that the Social Security Administration employs) but apparently

being polite and compliant (me and my wife) won't get you any points either! :bonk:

Thank you all for the advice about the SSN. I haven't told Julian I messed up on this, but he'll probably be on later to read it anyway. He's out right now with his best man having lunch, probably complaining about how gloomy it is here today. He thought it would be sunnier.

Why do you have to be so rude about him? What has he done to YOU personally that you think you know what he's like? And the Harry Potter thing is ridiculous and juvenile.

Edit: he just came home with Alex from lunch.

If expecting decent service makes me an 'elitist' then I'll take the label gladly, cheers. I just cannot fathom why somebody who cannot speak or understand basic English is put in a public facing position. If I had a Scottish or Irish accent, it would be completely understandable, but even Melissa has no problem understanding me so I don't see why somebody whose job it is to work with 'foreigners' should have such issues.

Oh yes, the endless Harry Potter references never get old.

How did YOU mess it up? Why didn't Julian research it before he even moved? It's not just your responsibility to know and understand how the process works. I'm sure they would have said something if he didn't come up in the system. If you don't get the card, go back and check again. It's not the end of the world.

If I'm permitted an observation I think that if young immigrants in the UK

have gone through the school system there, they are likely to come out

with a fairly good "British English" when they get their certificate, if they

pass the test to qualify for it. I have been impressed by seeing folks who

are obviously not natives to the UK having very good level of English.

English as taught in America is more of a mixed bag I think and there's

no guarantee that your English will be good if you are native or foreign born.

If you get a HS degree there's no guarantee you will be able to speak English

passably here. We go overboard to have every kind of accommodation for

non-English language groups but we mostly neglect the English that we

should be promoting among all as a reasonable standard.

Don't put the blame on yourself; the SSA staff are universally known as screw-ups.

Julian doing research or not doing reasearch wouldn't have changed things much.

Don't wait for the card (that most likely won't come) or any kind of

letter from them for more than 3 weeks.

It's not too late, Julian. I'm only over on the West Side, just off the I-10. Take the 110 South to the 10 West. Otherwise, I extend my offer once more to be Melissa's sister-wife.heart.gif

Exactly what I've been trying to tell Melissa. The schools in this country are simply awful, there's no way round that. Fortunately there are some very good 'private' schools in our area, but that is a bridge we will burn when we come to it.

We DID research it, but I guess I misunderstood. Julian thought he had to wait, and I said no. But yes, it's not the end of the world.

This is so weird, Julian and I are both on our laptops, posting and sitting next to each other. :star:

Yes, there are some good schools around here, but that's not something to worry about for now, sweetie.
