Airline baggage weight limits for Russia to USA

So we got our visa approved the other day, and have now started the search for a ticket to get Tanya here. Not buying anything until she has the visa in her hands. :) So she brought up a good thought about the baggage limit restrictions. Tanya spoke with one of the Aeroflot reps and they told her it was 20KG for checked bags, and another 10 for carry-ons. I was planning on getting a ticket that goes from her city of Kemerovo to Pittsburgh. I know it's a couple stops and all, but it will be much easier for Tanya to have one full itinerary rather than fly to Moscow on one carrier(Aeroflot), then get on Delta to go to JFK and on to Pittsburgh. The idea of changing planes, airlines, and re-checking her bags for the next airline would be very stressful, so we are not doing that. I know when I travel to Europe I am allowed to take two checked bags for 50 lbs a piece, and of course a carry-on(I never bring this much). So I was hoping it was the same for her, or at least something that would allow her to bring as much as she can with her. We will def ship some of her things too, but it will not be the whole apartment. ha ha. Any ideas? Or what have you all had with this?

My suggestion is for you to travel there, and then return with her. That removes the stress for her (changing airlines and going through foreign airports). Also, this will allow you to double the baggage coming back for free.

YES - GO AND BRING HER :) GREAT ADVICE.

after my fiascos over the years with delta:

my advice: fly lufthansa and continental combined.

you can book through gotorussia.com or

yahoo travel.

why not fly LED - via Dusseldorf or Munich to your destination ?

plus your bag fee for extra bag in one fee $55 paid locally to the

SPB ticket counter (outside of security) before you enter.

also there are other flights to PA - maybe you can research those.

one plane change - not 2 if she travels alone..............

For the price of an extra plane ticket, it seems like he could just ship an awful lot of stuff. Maybe then she wouldn't even need to check anything in and could just have a carry on.

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!

Also for the price of the extra ticket, she could just buy whatever she needs when she gets here. Tell her to bring nothing if its too much trouble.

This is what China is for, to produce cheap stuff for our consumption. For $400-500 at Old Navy, you can have an entire wardrobe.

So is this a plane ticket for 2010 or 2011

Here's one option, maybe not perfect but an option. Aeroflot has a direct flight from Moscow to Dulles Airport (I think it's only on Thursday). THE POE there was easy for my wife. She got through in about 40 minutes.

I think having you fly over to escort her to the US is too expensive and unnecessary. And you'd need that annoying and somewhat expensive visa to go there on top of the plane ticket. Better to spend the money on shipping her stuff over.

Aeroflot flies from Moscow to Dulles and JFK as well. It also happens to be the cheapest ticket. I'll be flying it from Moscow to Dulles on Jan 6. I think it's quite possible she will have to go through security again in Moscow coming from a smaller airport there.

Yeppers. Plus she doesn't need all that much to bring. Ship as much as possible or get it on another trip.

The price for extra bags is much cheaper than you flying over and back. It sounds like you have it set up pretty well. I always like the POE to be where you are. Sometimes the customs entry can be a real hassle and making connections adds a lot of tension to an already tense flight. So, if you are there waiting for her to leave POE, she will really appreciate it.

Make sure she doesn't try to bring any electrical appliances, whether personal or kitchen. You can get her a new one here without the problems of electrical conversion.

You can bring back other things on future trips. You do know that you will be returning to the motherland, don't you.

Varies by airline. Aerosvit this last summer was 27kg for the transatlantic flight NY-Kiev and back, but our flights from Burlington to NY were limited to 20kg by JetBlue.

If you are going over, bring a small suitcase inside a large one. Each person was allowed two checked bags, one carry on and one purse or laptop case.

The stress of changing airlines? What is she, five years old?

She's a big girl. Book her the cheapest flight you can find and then use the money you saved to buy her whatever she needs when she gets here. Also, keep in mind 20kg is about 44lbs so even though it's not your "two bags 50lbs each" it's darn close. 88 lbs plus a carry on is a lot of stuff. Most women can't even carry 100 lbs through an airport.

At this point she should be selling off anything big that she can't bring with her (car, apt., dacha, etc.) and giving away household items (furniture, electronics, etc.) to family members/friends. She needs to really evaluate what's important for her to bring and what's not. My wife showed up with a whole bag of shoes and cosmetics. Not what I would've brought, but hey, it's her sh!t. (Her other bag was full of books. I don't get that one either but I'm not her.) Tell your girl to decide what she wants to have here and totally liquidate everything else.

Shipping heavy boxes full of books/dvds/photos/etc. seems to be the way to go for moving that stuff. Smaller, heavier items that won't be needed right away should be mailed over via post. Clothing (especially seasonal clothing - don't need winter coat/boots in spring, does she?) too. Everything else should be liquidated. She can buy new when she gets here.

Amazingly enough, my wife still doesn't have much "stuff." She has about 83 cosmetic products and 37 more in the bathroom and our closets are full of clothes, shoes and boots (because her dresser drawers are full of books?) but other than that, she doesn't really have "stuff." Does she really need it?

Encourage her to scrap whatever is non-essential with the implication that new stuff can be purchased after arrival.

Bingo. She shouldn't bring squat except for a few personal items and all her money.

Exactly.

Once again, are you marrying a grown-up or a 5-year-old?

There's no room for that stuff anyway and it's too heavy.

I've yet to return. Too expensive.

Actually I'm flying JetBlue from Maine to JFK on Sunday (50# limit)and Aerosvit JFK-SIP (20 kg) BOTH airlines allow 1 free checked bag, a 10 kg carry on (they never weight it though so "if it fits it ships"), and personal bag or laptop bag.

I agree with the crowd though, that for the price of your ticket (and visa) you could pay for the extra bag(s), ship a lot of stuff AND meet her at JFK to escort her the rest of the way to P-Burg.

I tend to agree with slim, she is not 5. she has done a lot of the leg work on getting the visa already. I'd rather save my days for when she gets here so we can use them here together.

the interesting this is Kemerovo to Pittsburgh is cheaper than JFK, IAD (Washington DC), PHL (Philadelphia), BWI(Baltimore), and it seems like any other decent size city. And I didn't lookup the KG to pounds is for 20KG. that is a lot, and if she can get 2 bags checked that's a hell of a lot. she really doesn't need to bring much either. She does not have a car, lives in a studio apt, and really does not have much.

Bottom line is get her here in one piece, safely.

Buy a First Class ticket. They don't hassle over luggage limits, and they give you tons of help handling it. No lines to stand in. She can stay in the lounge while she is waiting for connection and frankly the sooner you start treating her like a queen the better. Find someone to sell you the miles at a discount. its pretty cheap to fly first right now, especially FROM there.
