My Husband is in India and we are getting ready to get all the documents for DS230. Right now we are at the Affidavit of Support form, but wanted to get a head start on the documents required for DS 230

Now the question is on the police clearance certificate

In the last 5 yrs , he has worked in 4 differents states in India for more than a year in each states - the qn is do we need Police clearance from each state ? If so what is the procedure? Is it different for each state ? Or do we need just one from where he is leaving currently? Any idea on timing to get one issued? and how long is it valid for ? Any info or any short cuts to get it will be highly appreciated!!

The next question is on passport clearance. Do we need to go to where the passport was issued for this? Or what is the procedure to get this? Wht is the timing and validity of this certificate ?

If anyone have gone thorugh this recently and have any insight or suggestion for us - Please let us know - Thanks in advance

It will be more helpful if you can provide few more details like what consulate he is going to appear for the interview and where was his passport issued? Was it issued recently? Which place he is right now?

I recently went thru this process and i was in Bangalore. Its pretty easy to get both the certificates. Whatever i am answering is based on my experience and what i told by Chennai Consulate. Others may have their own experience.

Do we need Police clearance from each state?: No. Just the current place where you are staying right now. That will be Kerala for you.

If so what is the procedure?: Go to the police station or commissioner's office and check with them. Make sure that you ask for Police Clearance Certificate which will cost you not more than 100 to 200 INR.

Is it different for each state?: Yes. Some places may ask you to present the interview letter as a proof. I know Gujarat does that. Not sure about Kerala. Please check with your Police Station or Commissioner's office.

Or do we need just one from where he is leaving currently?: Yes. Just one from the place he is living right now.

Any idea on timing to get one issued?: 15 to 20 days at a max.

and how long is it valid for?: 1 Year.

Any info or any short cuts to get it will be highly appreciated!!: Try to request the officer.

The next question is on passport clearance. Do we need to go to where the passport was issued for this?: You can either get it from the place where it was issued or the current place where you are residing. I will recommend that if your passport was issued from Bangalore then do it from there as they will do it the same day. So as from Bombay. Other states may take 10-15 days.

Or what is the procedure to get this? Wht is the timing and validity of this certificate ?: Go to the Passport office and apply for that. It is valid for one year from the date of issue.
