Why is your input limited to cheerleading Layla, and mentioning scholars with no proof of what they say and what their sources are, Rahma? Do you want a piece of this, or what? Or do you just want to stand on a pedestal and keep your hands clean while admonishing others?

Haven't participated because I come to a thread and find 10+ pages of "response". By the time I wade through it all, all the substantive discussion has degraded into a p*ssing match, so there isn't anything to contribute other than to comment on the p*ssing match.

I agree, Rahma.... that's why I've chosen to come in on occasion and just blow sunshine and silliness around - cuz this is just silly..... all this nonsense.

You had a good idea and it was a charitable thing to do by beginning this thead. The nikah contract is an important aspect of a Muslim marriage and it is good to know the facts about law and applicability.

The problem is, you have some folks who don't know the facts but still wish to interject their lame comments to promote their personal agrandizement. As long as there are so few who can tell the difference between fact and desire and egg on their friends, we will not be able to have a constructive discussion about anything Islamic. And as long as there are folks who take the uneducated seriously, the hamster wheel will continue to turn. I don't have that problem; I work for a Muslim law firm. Islamic law and applicability is what I do in real life, not just read in books.

I wish you well. I know you're only trying to help. So am I, but the dependence on opinion is a crutch that impedes what could be a better, or at least more civil, source of knowledge.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Just out of curiousity, why do so many threads about Islam turn into a flame war? I know people disagree (haha, I know I do!) but this is a thread about a peaceful religion that has just turned into a train wreck like many others about Islam have.

VP, you mentioned to Sarah that it is disrespectful to joke about the quran. Well isn't this also a form of disrespect to your religion? I don't mean it in a way to say that it is your fault, but since you feel so passionate about your religion, I figured you would be the first to understand that your religion is not exactly being portrayed in the best light right now.

I rarely comment in the threads about Islam, but usually someone will start one for a good reason or to share some information, and they almost always turn into a train wreck. Just food for thought...
