This is your great complaint Danno? Of all the things to be concerned about?

"E Pluribus Unum" has been on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782 and has been our coinage and paper money continuously since 1786. "In God We Trust" on the coinage dates to nearly a century later, around the time of the Civil War. To this date both are on the money, but only E Pluribus Unum is on the Great Seal, on the Presidential Seal, the Seal of the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court. It also had the backing of our Founding Fathers, whereas "In God We Trust" is notable for being rejected by Theodore Roosevelt.

In a very real sense both inscriptions can legitimately be called the mottos of the United States. Obama didn't say anything about the "official" motto, he said the "motto". E Pluribus Unum is certainly that.

If Obama had said "Workers of the World Unite" or "Arbeit macht frei" or "Deutschland Uber Alles", I'd be worried.

"E Pluribus Unum"? Hardly.

Bottom line:

- he called it our national motto, he was wrong.

-He got a pass, Bush would not have.

That Socialist Roosevelt rejected "In God we trust".... makes it all the more fitting as our national Motto.

(Don't make me back up my "Roosevelt- Socialist" claim...I'll do it.)

- It is one of our national mottos. The only thing you might claim it's not is "official". That's rather like saying lacross is Canada's only official national sport, when everyone full well knows that hockey is truly the national sport in Canada, and no one suggests otherwise.

- Bush would get a pass from me, and I venture most Americans, for saying E Pluribus Unum is the national motto of the USA

- The Roosevelt you are thinking of is not the right Roosevelt. Sigh, Danno. Please please do try harder. Theodore Roosevelt, not FDR, rejected In God We Trust. Teddy was many things - a Republican, a leader of the charge up San Juan Hill, even a Bull Moose. But never ever a Democrat, and never ever a socialist. Neither was FDR a socialist of course, but that's not even what we're talking about here.
