If women are such bad drivers, as the bad old joke goes, then why do women enjoy lower car insurance premiums based on their lower accident rates?

As someone who used to drive as my job, I just find that joke to be a total pain in the #######! Let's go back to picking on immigrant drivers :)

Saudi Arabia is an Islamic Monarchy, don't they follow the sunna, sharia and coran and isn't it a model to makes the laws of this country? no?

 No they don't always follow the Quran and Sunnah in Saudi. There is no country today that completely follows or adheres to the sharia as it should be. The house of Saud (the royal family of Saudi) are far from the Quran and Sunnah... they are in Americas pocket! ;)

FYI, there is no law that prohibits women to drive in Saudi... this woman probably didn't have a driver's license and would have been arrested in the US under the same circumstances (driving without a license).

And how would she go about getting a license?

According to Amnesty International:

Women's freedom of movement is severely restricted. They may not travel abroad unless they have the written authorization of a male relative, usually their father or husband, and may have to be accompanied. Inside Saudi Arabia, they are forbidden to drive, a ban made official in 1990 by a Fatwa (edict) issued by the Council of Senior 'Ulama (religious scholars).

Clearly, if it is illegal for one to drive, then one can not get a license.

FYI, there is no law that prohibits women to drive in Saudi...

The Daily Star out of Lebanon has this on their website:

Saudi Arabia shelves plan to let women drive

Saudi Arabia's appointed consultative council has shelved a proposal by one of its members to lift the ban on women's driving in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom, newspapers reported Monday.

If no law exists to prohibit them from driving, how can a proposal to allow them to drive be shelved?

Saudi Arabia: proposal to allow women to drive fuels male rage

A man on Saudi Arabia Consultative Council suggested that the government might want to study ending its ban on allowing women to drive-and men all over the country responded with rage. Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that prohibits women drivers.

Mohammad al-Zulfa was besieged with angry phone calls and e-mails and was vilified in newspapers and on the Internet because he raised the issue. He suggested that only women over age 35 or 40 should be allowed to drive, and then only in cities, not on highways.

Some angry men have said he should be removed from the council or even deprived of his Saudi nationality.

Men complain that if women could drive cars, they would be able to leave home on their own, without male escorts. And they would have to interact with unrelated men like police officers and mechanics. Clerics say that if women drove, they would be put in situations with temptations for them or for men.

"Driving by women leads to evil," said one man in a letter to the newspaper Al-Watan. "Can you imagine what it will be like if her car broke down? She would have to seek help from men."

I disagree. A proposal to allow women over 35 to drive in the cities was shelved due to opposition by Saudi men. I think they are quite clear in not allowing women to drive, period. It is VP who is obfuscating the issue.

yup.. I'm not a magic kingdom fan myself. Show me something in the Qu'ran that says women are not permitted to drive cars, operate transportation, ride horses or camels, then we'll talk.

Saudi doesn't speak for the entire muslim world.

This may be of some interest to you:

http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?ref=45880&ln=eng

My amateur understanding of that is that a woman driving per se sn't bad , but is rather a 'gateway' to other bad things and is therefore not allowed.

Kinda like the argument that pot isn't bad because pot is harmful, but because it's a gateway drug.

Again this is one of those twisted websites. First of all the Niqab is not obligatory. it is not a sin not to wear one, but you don't have to. (the niqab is the face cover). Second of all, there are absolutly no evidence that show in Islam that a woman cannot drive.

Here are some of the Women's rights in Islam

The right to an education

The right to choose her own Husband

The right to an education

The Right to full financial support (the father and bothers if unmarried and the husband if married)

The right to own property

The right to work

The right to a housemaid if desired

The right participate in politics

Of course in Saudia Arabia most of these are probably not followed.
