yeah! link

exactly - you make my point beautifully - let's not do that stuff - ever

America's worst enemies are those who propose extra-judiciary assassinations, torture and collateral damage

Decent Americans and decent people from any nation need to speak out and say that kind of talk and that kind of action is wrong

If you don't, it's like you are declaring the bill of rights invalid and all the best that America stands for to be null and void when it comes right down to it. It declares us to be hypocrites and not to be on board with the 'city on a hill' status that is so often claimed.

It makes us the same as Saddam Hussein and we will not deserve to be regarded as any better - just different

Last week I signed up for the Constitution and to respect the law. If the newest American can do that, why can't the established ones ?

a) Public key systems can be made robust in the face of the 'obvious' attacks. E.g. modern RSA chooses a multi-prime key that is a product of n>2 primes, and utilize randomized padding of the keystring to avoid repeated plaintext attacks. RSA can be made secure, and strong RSA is the basis of the eCommerce we all conduct over SSL (e.g. https) routinely.

Well, the main idea behind public-key systems is the problem of factoring

large numbers. These days, secure RSA keys are at least 1024–2048 bits long.

I personally use 4096. 128 bits used to be sufficiently secure back in

the '90s, but this year a distributed algorithm factored a 768-bit long key.

b) I think you've made my point for me. There is an obvious need for some things to remain secret, and for information systems to robustly preserve that secrecy. The WikiLeaks claim that tossing it all out into the sunlight is preposterous. Do you still think Assange is one of the good guys?

I do. I understand the need to keep certain things secret, but a list of buildings?
