Nobody who cares about this country and others he has damaged should love this guy. Personally I think he is a dangerous, reckless, A-hole.

i don't see him much different than the average newspaper, cable news channel or network news. no ethics in media these days.

That's a bit presumptuous. The attitude behind the Wikileaks is that all information should be open and transparent. Unfortunately, real life doesn't work that way. Imagine if you and your spouse could literally read other's minds. Do you think that would help or hurt your marriage? How about friends and family? Would you want to know everything everyone has ever said or even thought about you?

The Wikileaks in general, serve no real benefit to anyone. While some information that is kept confidential can and should be exposed, it should be handled carefully in a way that is mindful of all the repercussions it will cause.

While the system is imperfect, and the US is imperfect, WikiLeals serves no real purpose. A great example is the footage of the journalists getting killed in Iraq. In a vacuum the footage appears to show a callus disregard for life, perhaps even deliberate murder. But in full context, understanding the full background of the days, and hours leading up to the leaked footage, it was merely misidentification im the heat of battle. A tragic series of events leading up to what was only in hindsight a mistake.

There is no value to anyone but our enemies in revealing this list of critical assets per this latest leak, except for strategic value to our enemies. How is it news? What is the point?

It's about freedom of information, from what I understand.

I just think it's farcical that information can be considered "secret" when 3 million people have access to it, including early 20s army grunts in afghanistan.

quite untrue. having the security clearance does not grant one carte blanche access to anything of that classification.

access is restricted on a "need to know" basis. Simply possessing a clearance does not automatically authorize the individual to view all material classified at that level or below that level. The individual must present a legitimate "need to know" in addition to the proper level of clearance. (what this means is - one must both have the security clearance and the need to know to perform their job).

a recap of the security classifications:

top secret--National security information or material which requires the highest degree of protection and the unauthorized disclosure of which could reasonably be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to the national security.

b. secret--National security information or material which requires a substantial degree of protection and the unauthorized disclosure of which could reasonably be expected to cause serious damage to the national security.

c. confidential--National security information or material which requires protection and the unauthorized disclosure of which could reasonably be expected to cause damage to the national security.

Some things that have NOT been published in these cables...

1. Nothing implicating that Bush knew anything about 9/11 or was compliant in it.

2. Nothing that indicates GWB knowingly mislead anyone about weapons of mass destruction

3. Obama's birth certificate

Hmmm....

Yeah. one of them ought to have unocvered the 9/11 conspiracy or Obama's birth certificate OR proof that Bush lied and people died. So far, Global warming is a hoax, Hillary tries to steal identity from diplomats (PLEASE get a new hairdo using their credit cards Hillary!)

what about the GOOD stuff?

I hope you're talking about symmetric ciphers and not public-key cryptography, because 128-bit RSA/DSA keys are not exactly strong.

I make no claim whatsoever to expertise in cryptography, I'm at best a layman. I venture that you are too, however.

With that in mind:

a) Public key systems can be made robust in the face of the 'obvious' attacks. E.g. modern RSA chooses a multi-prime key that is a product of n>2 primes, and utilize randomized padding of the keystring to avoid repeated plaintext attacks. RSA can be made secure, and strong RSA is the basis of the eCommerce we all conduct over SSL (e.g. https) routinely.

b) I think you've made my point for me. There is an obvious need for some things to remain secret, and for information systems to robustly preserve that secrecy. The WikiLeaks claim that tossing it all out into the sunlight is preposterous. Do you still think Assange is one of the good guys?

why is this douchebag still alive?

because we need to torture his @ss & find out how he got this info.

This sort of talk is why America is hated the world over and people who talk like this are the most unpatriotic in the country and the ones who damage America's future the most. This talk disrespects the constitution and the whole idea of the just Republic

Let's live up to the ideals of the country and set a good example to the torturers are dictators of the world

Let's be a country of laws - all laws - due process. No shooting people in back alleys or strangling them in their hotel rooms or kidnapping. Let's show we are better than that.

Nobody will respect us for torturing and assassinating and it will encourage even more people to spill our secrets and we will have accumulate even more grisly secrets along the way
