I became a citizen on Thursday and yesterday (the day after) I registered to vote and contacted my County Democratic party.

Their manifesto includes the following:

Immigration

We oppose legislation that denies civil and/or human rights or educational opportunities for immigrants and their children regardless of their immigration status.

I wrote and said I was keen on getting involved in supporting a center left agenda and I would never vote right wing. I said that I was not in agreemnet with inducing illegal immigration by offering education and other benefits etc to illegals and their families.

They wrote back this morning and said it was Democrat policy to offer all these things to families and their children 'while the parents are in the process of making their status legal'

WHAT TOTAL BULL !!!!!

I know a highly skilled guy from India who is a total whiz at his professional job. He has been here 7 years and still waits in line for a GC. One day he will get it and then he must wait another 5 for USC

We on VJ know what chance an illegal apple picker has of 'making their status legal'

I was really looking forward to helping further progressive policies in the USA but these guys are just wackos from cloud cuckoo land and will not get mainstream support this way.

They might as well advocate compulsory electric cars of no more than 2 seat capacity

I wasted my trip to register to vote as I wont be using it

If you are not going to vote why did you even bother becoming a citizen?

I didnt register as Democrat as anyone can vote for anyone in Washington State.

Even in Primaries

I suppose I could vote for the dopiest Republican in a primary just to mess it up for them and give them a poor candidate

However, Republicans stand unopposed in Central Washington as this is 'hang em high' cowboy country

Who can I vote for ? The Democrats are leaving the center ground unattended and are going after sympathizers for illegal immigrants for cynical reasons as they see the Hispanic vote as important in the future and the Democrats are just showing they have no principles and would chase Charles Manson's vote if they thought it would help them.

If there is no sensible 'left of center' political party in the US then I have no outlet for my vote.

I am as turned off by the nutty left as I am by the grisly right

I believe in taxing the super rich more and not encouraging illegals and freeloaders. Who can I vote for ?

A party's platform is a general set of positions to identify the overall stance of the party. It does not obligate every member of the party to agree with every plank of that platform, nor does every sitting member (House Rep, Senator, State representative, etc.) agree with every statement or vote on legislation consistent with every statement.

We have two major parties, and they establish platforms on a wide array of domestic and foreign policy issues.

Inevitably each of us as individuals are going to find things we disagree with in the stated platforms of both parties. The way I approach it, and I think most registered party members do, is to find a party that best overlaps with your personal views. Support the stances you agree with, and work to change from within those that you don't. Rejecting a party outright because they don't pass a certain litmus test on a certain specific issue will leave you outside, as you've found. Not that there's anything wrong with being an unregistered voter but you really shouldn't be so surprised or outraged to find that being the case.

With some research you can find candidates with both R's and D's after their names who hold views important to you in common.

Welcome to Namby Pamby Land and the lunatic fringe. These yo-yos will tell you all day long that they really are against illegal immigration, but they don't want to do anything to stop it while they extend taxpayer provided social benefits to illegal aliens until they get a Dumbocratic amnesty with a pathway to US citizenship along with a Dumbocratic voter card. I can't imagine why this is in their party platform.

There is no such thing as an illegal alien...there are only undocumented Dumbocrats.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
