i only file for one year of tax return because i'm a student in 2007, i did file for 2008, and again didn't file for the 2009 because i get pregnant in the middle of 2008 and stop working from the begining of 2009 till now. so how am i going about wrting this explanation letter, for example the format. does it need to be notarized or signed by someone? if need to be notarized, do i need to bring proof of im a student in 2007 and proof of im pregnant in 2008-2009?

You must always file taxes with a few exceptions. If you do not qualify for one of those exceptions, you can file any back taxes you failed to file in the past. You will need the most recent tax return for the Affidavit of Support, and submitting tax returns for the past 2nd or 3rd years is optional but often helpful.

Hope this helps.

Filing tax returns has nothing to do with having a co-sponsor.

If you didn't need to file because you made no money or not enough money (most part-time jobs will earn enough so you must file), then simply write and sign an explanation letter, no need to notarise.

one more question

i only worked and file for 2008 tax return, on line 25 of i864, Federal income tax return information, there are two options:

*I have filed a Federal tax return for each of the three most recent tax years. I haveattached the required photocopy or transcript of my Federal tax return for only themost recent tax year

-then i need to list the year and the income. how can i file this if i only have 1 year of tax return?

or

*I have attached photocopies or transcripts of my Federal tax returns for mysecond and third most recent tax years

which one i should check?
