Assange lawyer condemns calls for assassination of WikiLeaks' founder

Wikileaks did not directly acquire any of the data. They were given the data by a military analyst. If anyone committed a crime, it was that analyst. Not to say Assange is a good guy, but his behavior seems to be par for the course when it comes to major whistle-blowing news stories.

As far as what should be secret and what shouldn't be, its fine line. The only way we can hold a democracy accountable is only if the government is completely transparent. But at the same time, there is a need for secrecy in some aspects of diplomacy.

I think you understand as well as he does that people WILL kill him if they have the chance. We can debate whether it was a good idea to do so or what should be kept secret. But if the guy that orders him killed thinks the secrets were worth killing for, he will be killed. No fine line about it.

Who has died directly because of Wikileaks revelations?

Seriously, government officials shouldn't be in the business of making death threats.. hell, even the Russians are subtler than that.

when he turns up dead, or just missing (a favorite of the Russians) the people that did it will not be the ones that made threats.

I don't doubt that.

Supposedly they are suppose to be releasing some information about the Russian government and are already under surveillance by the FSB, if something happens to Assange, I would put my money on the Russians.

Look at the way the Russians handled that terrorist hostage situation a few years ago. If that had happened in a western country, they would still probably be negotiating. Like it or not, Russia takes care of their business.

Turns out this guy is wrong.

The dictionary definition of espionage is different from what is delineated in the Espionage Act.

espionage (ˈɛspɪəˌnɑːʒ, ˌɛspɪəˈnɑːʒ, ˈɛspɪənɪdʒ)

—n

1. the systematic use of spies to obtain secret information, esp by governments to discover military or political secrets

Espionage Act of 1917

To convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies. This was punishable by death or by imprisonment for not more than 30 years or both.

To convey false reports or false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies when the United States is at war, to cause or attempt to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or to willfully obstruct the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States. This was punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000 fine or by imprisonment for not more than 20 years or both.

Turns out we are both wrong about espionage, and ol Chuckles was right.

i'm gonna frame this

If the Russians want to make an example of him, they will inject him with a radioactive pellet so everyone can watch him die over a few days time on YouTube. Otherwise they will just "disappear him"

I know, zombie thread, but this seemed most appropriate here, plus Spooky started it, and it helps understand how long this whole ordeal has been going on.

Biden Trying to Cut a Deal With Julian Assange

Federal prosecutors are pursuing a deal to allow WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to avoid espionage charges and instead plead guilty to the misdemeanor of mishandling classified data. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the talks between U.S. authorities and Assange's lawyers on Wednesday. The independent outlet Consortium News then confirmed that it had learned the same details "off the record" several months ago.

and then biden will forget about the deal and he'll spend 155+ years in jail.

We've not discussed this outcome.  The thoughts here seem reasonable; what do you think?

A Few Parting Thoughts on Julian Assange

This appears to be the end of a saga that has now dragged on for nearly fifteen years.  Julian Assange is back in Australia after pleading guilty to conspiring to obtain and disseminate classified information.  That admission was part of a plea deal that had been worked out between Assange, the UK, and the United States.  He will not serve any additional time behind bars for his actions.  So is this justice?  [...]

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I suspect Mr. Assange will be closely watched by both the US and Aussie intelligence agencies.
