Wow! And I thought that Norway was one of those good first world countries and highly ranked in major international studies. Remember how much happier they are than people in the US?

you might be thinking of Denmark {cough cough cough, pass that could you please?} which is #3 on the list. Norway was #20, USA #15

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

In life, you always come full circle.

thats why grandparents and grandchildren should spend much time together ;) in addition to all the wisdom they can share with the younger generation, they also have much in common:

mutual enemy to fight against

naps

no job (after retirement)

want to stay awake but fall asleep before all the good stuff happens

have fun and dont care what people think of them

dress for comfort rather than style

lives life to the fullest enjoying every moment

hmmm i know there is much more

from George Carlin:

"The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What's that, a bonus? I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating...

...and you finish off as an orgasm."

I don't agree with the bracelets.. but I do agree with some sort of watching method because some people are REALLY lazy at work.

At one of my old jobs several of my colleagues would go on smoking breaks for EXTREMELY long periods several times a day. One of the girls worked extremely hard (and longer hours) when she was working so her I understood... but the longer I worked the the more i noticed her morning and afternoon tea breaks, plus her smoking breaks, plus toilet breaks accumulated to more than 2 hours out of every working day (we worked next to each other and i had to ensure I was there when she wasn't). Not just her but her friends that joined her.

There are rules now in a lot of Australia workplaces that do not permit smoking breaks. If you want a smoking break you take it at your morning, afternoon or lunch break. Where before you could have the regular breaks PLUS smoking breaks.

At another of my jobs we had to do time recording. We had to record our days and what we spent our time doing because we charged clients based on our time. There were a certain number of "miscellaneous" breaks that you were permitted. It became difficult to slack off because you either had to charge the client, or get caught slacking. Small office so it was hard to slack off.

One of the reasons I don't agree with toilet monitoring though, is what if I eat particularly bad food that day or day before and need to spend more time in the toilet? How embarrassing! Will I need a doctors certificate to prove it?

I also agree that menstrual time does NOT require an extreme change in toilet needs. To get into it, there are certain requirements for tampons as leaving them in too long can cause toxic shock. If you have a heavy flow you'd change more often but I doubt it's a significant difference for most people.

i think the most shocking thing about moving to the city was the laziness ... i learned quickly to never take a job unless they gave merit raises (big money versus that across the board garbage!!)

nothing rubbed me more raw than working like a dog and watching bums sitting outside smoking for 45min of every hour andnot only get same pay but same raise? yeah, i dont think so :P

i always got to work early ... one place it was 20min because of my morning routine when i got there, i liked to have everything in place and ready to begin work by 7:30. one gal used to fly in 10min late every day, EVERY day, then she'd get all her stuff organized to make it look like she was working on something, get a cup of coffee and usually be making personal calls to her husband/sister/whomever, go take her morning poop LOL, make the rounds on the way back from the bathroom talking to everyone in ther cubicles and then she'd be so surprised whne lunctime came so quickly and she had no work done. needlesss to say, her merit raises were not nice... mine were excellent. within a year i was making much more than her and she had been there for several years. bad behaviour should not be rewarded.

i would say hire only reliable and responsible people who can self-monitor and fire the deadbeats but honestly good employees are rare. i thought "grownups" all had this ability to self-monitor and not have to be treated as kindergartners but since moving to the city i see that is not the case.

as for toxic shock, i think a trip every 2hrs is sufficient.

I am 100% on your page. It irked me SO much that i worked so much harder at this other particular job and others were taking smokos and coffee breaks all the time... but I agree what bothered me more is bonuses were the same. I once got a SMALLER bonus than one of those slackers (right before I quit) and the reason was her boss was a partner in the firm.

Once I left though, it all came to light... small consolation I suppose.

What if someone was able to smoke outside 45 minutes per hour and still eclipse your productivity. Would that matter to you? Because at the end of the day, that is all your employer cares about.

if you're speaking about me personally then "wouldnt happen". :D

JFTR, her productivity (before she was finally fired) was almost nil, when she was inside she would be popping popcorn in micro (so she could curb her nicotine urge) or doing other #######. she would answer a few phone calls from warehouse phone if it was too cold to smoke outside (wasnt supposed to smoke at all inside but she did - that was the last nail in her coffin, when the boss caught her he fired her on the spot cause he was fed up - i was gone by that time :P).

when you have a worker like that who is tolerated you can actually end up losing good workers, the boss lost 2 of his hardest workers (one of which was his own BIL!) becasue he was afraid to fire her ... that was the rudest i ever quit a job and surprisingly he didnt take it badly (how many men do you know would take being called a ball-less, #######-less wonder and not take that badly? :P but he knew it was true). he even hired the person i sent in after that for a job becasue he knew i would never put my reputation on the line for someone else unless i knew they were a good worker.

LOL you would have went off your rocker on this...

the place i worked in office with all women there was this one gal who would miss cut off every month (cut off = time period when ALL docs rec'd dated that month HAD to be processed and cleared from desks and it is hard work, no breaks and working as fast as you can). this was only time of month anyone was allowed to get OT and it was a big thing to get it (i.e.if you have OT in your dept means you are not hitting goals thru the month).

so this one gal every month would call in sick... till she ran out of sick time. then she was told look you have no sick time, you've missed the max amount of time allowed for an entire year and you've only worked here a short time, NO MORE MISSING CUT-OFF (period).

next cut off she misses and Pam calls her at home and tells her you get in here or you are fired. so she comes to work, claims she is being disciminated against because she is black {sigh} Pam says file a complaint but get back to work if you want to keep your job :P

little while later she comes over claiming to be sick and wnats to go home, pam says listen you're "sick" every cut off, just go back to work... at this point it's like dealing with a toddler. little time passes again and she comes back over, grabs pam's wastebasket, smiles, sticks her finger down her throat and makes herself vomit, smiles again and says "NOW can i go home?"

i tell you, right then is when i realized why i was a worker and pam was a boss  i was so ticked off watching that ####### i was ready to bust her in the head for acting like such a JA to such a nice person. i would have had the compnay in 10 kinds of trouble... but anyway, she was there for another month after that but she DID get fired.

It was more of a general question. I ask because I am actually in that situation. I am far more productive than my colleagues, yet I spend significatnly less time to do my job. Do my co-workers resent me? I don't care. My supervisors know my output and allow me much more leniance than anyone else when it comes to meeting attendance, length of breaks, etc. My point is, who cares what people do as long as the job gets done? It makes no sense to me the managers who micromanage trivial things like taking smoke breaks and arriving at work at some capriciously determined time.
