A boss in Norway has ordered all female staff to wear red bracelets during their periods - to explain why they are using the toilet more often.

The astonishing demand was revealed in report by a workers' union into 'tyrannical' toilet rules in Norwegian companies.

The study claimed businesses were becoming obsessed with lost productivity due to employees spending too much time answering the call of nature.

It found 66 per cent of managers made staff ask them for an electronic key card to gain access to the toilets so they could monitor breaks.

Toilets in one in three companies were placed under video-surveillance, while other firms made staff sign a toilet 'visitors book', the report by the Parat union said.

It added: 'But the most extreme action was taken by one manager who made women having their period wear a red bracelet to justify more frequent trips to the loo.

'Women quite justifiably feel humiliated by being tagged in this way, so that all their colleagues are aware of this intimate detail of their private life.'

The report, which did not name the firm imposing red bracelets on female staff, has now been passed on to Norway's chief comsuner ombudsman Bjorn Erik Thon.

He said: 'These are extreme cases of workplace monitoring, but they are real.

'Toilet Codes relating to mentrual cycles are clear violations of privacy and is very insulting to the people concerned.

'I hope and believe that this is not representative of the Norwegian working life in general.

'We receive many complaints about monitopring in the workplace, which is becoming a growing problem as it is so often being used for something other than what it was originally intended for.

'We will be carrying out a full review of the rules surrounding employment and privacy over the coming year.'

i must be a trouble maker  cause i would just talk everyone into wearing red bracelets, men included ;)

women face discrimination in the workplace their entire lives, most just tolerate it, men are usually oblivious to it, but if it steps over the line (like this) it's time to push back.

i worked in an office of 40 women previously (i would NOT recommend that to anyone  ) and elder women will even put younger women thru he!! women discriminate from meanness and jealousy. usually men discriminate because they are ignorant of what their actions are doing.... how many men look at this as a logical solution so the boss knows not to harrass the women with red bracelets on? but they dont understand how embarrassing that would be for the women who might as well go about weaing a sign saying "I am on my period right now". for the most part men are logical and women are emotional. thats not to say men dont have emotions or women do not have logic, but it's the way in which a problem is confronted... women would be more likely to think about the feelings of others, men want to solve the problem and they get tunnel vision on that.

JMHO

i thought we had this solved here in US... 1/2hr lunch and 2 - 15min breaks... do what you need to do in that time. decide if you want to blow the 15min outside smoking that cigarette or taking care of business in the potty :P

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

I don't really understand why women would need to use the restroom more often then.

me either...unless they're having some major issues down there, most people have that sort of thing under control and don't need to monitor it

I don't agree with that "most" comment but I've never worked in an office, only a lab or a kitchen.

Paul - are you suddenly a woman? how would you know how women feel?

Paul, it does still happen. The wage gap is closing, but there is still a gap.

Paul is an expert in everything. It's true, just ask him. No need for experience or education as those only serve to cloud your mind with liberal bias.

for the most part neither can i, if they are appropriately planning. we're all different but even on heavy 1st day a few minutes every couple hours max would be all needed (2 - 15min breaks and lunchtime takes care of that). really sounds like they were just using this as an excuse ... probably hanging out in bathroom texting LOL
