Duh, the Mexicans are distorting our data!

In any case, I don't think some exceptions mean that the correlation is weak. I would say that all the factors available in those maps are highly correlated, relatively speaking. The whole point is to show the correlation between education, income, and health.

OK so I used the "download data" link on the measureofamerica site. I applied the pearson method on the two data series (% without HS and life exp at birth). The correlation coefficient is -0.146 which indicates a weak negative correlation.

You weirdo. I did the same thing at the state level and got a -0.56384.

I actually wanted to separate the date out by state and calculate a pearson co for each state but then i got lazy. i wonder if certain states have stronger correlations than others.

oh and cd level is better, IMO. because there is a lot less variation between cd's in terms of population.

no, you're right. i thought that the download data would download everything available, but it just downloads what is selected on your graph at the time.

I will concede that the correlation isn't as strong as I would have expected it to be.

life expectancy is 54% with % with at least a bachelor's though, 47% with their overall "education index". 51% w/ median income.

I don't understand.

pearson coefficient for life expectancy against % with bachelor's degree or more is 0.54. It's a 0.47 for life expectancy vs. education index. In other words, the correlation b/w life expectancy and % w/o HS is much weaker than the correlation between education & life expectancy as a whole.

Correlation for life expectancy and median income is 0.51.
