Hello everyone,

I'm sure this has been asked millions of times, still I'm asking:

What do I need to do to get permission to work with a F-1 visa? I will be starting college this January.

F-1 are only authorized to work on campus and only part time. See your DSO when you arrive at school to find out what you need to do to get your paperwork to get your SSN.

You cannot work off campus. The only way is to apply for an OPT, which is generally done after your graduation and is only valid if your job is directly related to your major at school

Other than that, you cannot work off campus or full time

i wasn't going to work under-the-table... i'm not gonna play with my privilege of a visa... but thank you, so if i see this right i don't have to worry about getting any permission as long as it is on-campus?

You still need permission. There is a boat-load of paperwork that the school needs to submit on your behalf to the SSA before you can work. that is why you MUST see your DSO before you begin working because not only does the SSA need your school information to issue you an SSN, but if your grades are below a certain GPA, you cannot work on campus. All this needs to be organized BEFORE you are permitted to work

With an F1 visa you can legally work off campus but there are some conditions:

You have to have been in the country for at least 9months. After the 9 months you should be able to apply. You are just giving to have to prove " economic hardship" and/or change in your conditions. This is because to obtain your I20 you had to show documentation that you had a sponsor or means to pay for your school for the entire duration of your I20, ( or at least for one year).

So you need a good reason explaining why after 9 months it is not the case anymore.

It is feasible and thousands of F1 visa holders do it all the time. The only thing is that your EAD has a restriction of 20 hours off campus. Some people combine those 20 hours off campus (part time) with some part time work on campus( you most likely need to work that out your international student advisor )

On campus jobs are usually in short supply and will be given to the most needy. If you are not in that group you probably won't be offered a job.
