 ok so instead of suit and martini he would be wearing boots, holding a longneck? carrying a rifle, surrounded by cornfed girls in daisy dukes, with a hound dog by his side... in his pickup truck. sounds like the beginning of a country song, guess that's what would be playing in the background

Life is good in my part of the world.good.gif

I like the daisy dukes part and will be trying to get her in one now.whistling.gif

I think it was William who said it was against the TOS but I would be wrong. I think it was something about being condescending or something.

I've seen quite a few people use it and never even heard of it being against the TOS. I suppose it could be considered a pejorative.

Interesting. Normally, anything that shooter says, I would qualify as bullsh!t.

I HATE "dear". I'd almost rather you call me c###, usually it's closer to what the person actually wants to say.

the filter won't let you type that word, but we can type dear. :innocent:

Hahahahaha. I really don't like the term either, especially if it is said by someone who is neither my wife, or related to me by blood. There is this great pizza place near where I live. This is L.A., we have horrible pizza generally, but this place is great. I read the yelp review of the place, and really the only warning was that the woman who runs the place is overly friendly. I thought that was ok. I was there for 10 mins waiting on my pizza and the woman referred to me as "dear", "hun", "sweety", and "darling" at least half a dozen times each. Makes my skin crawl. But she's really nice and doesn't mean it in a pejorative manner. So I deal with it. If the arsehole at the corner store called me dear whilst overcharging me, i'd tell him to go ** himself with a broomstick. I guess context does mater.

I'm going to weigh in here on the use of 'dear'. It depends on context. In the original post in this thread where it was used it did not come off as condescending or insulting, nor did it appear to mean to do so, but was used more like the Old South habit of calling anyone 'sugar' or 'hon' - (both of which I dislike, so can appreciate its annoyance). The intent does not come across as an attempt to demean or to degrade someone, but is used as a 'catch all when you don't know the 'status' of the person, and ma'm or sir is too formal.

When it's use was deemed as a TOS violation it is because it was meant to put down, denigrate and demean the person at who it was directed. It isn't so much the use of 'dear' that is the TOS violation, but how it is used.

That being said, let's tone down the baiting that is going on in this thread, though, ok? Thanks :)

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

exactly (the bolded statement).

this woman's own sister still lives there with her husband and children, doesnt live in fear.

you are also correct in that many times people confuse culture with religion. people do things from their culture (or even take from other cultures because they live closely with them) and believe because this or that has 'always been done' it is part of their religion  when sometimes those very things are unislamic!!

edit: there are also christian hospitals, schools and so on.

LOL baiter :P you are such a master at that ;)

Please explain why this woman faces death...

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Same reason atheists keep it zipped in Washington State East of the Cascades - but then multiplied by a factor of x.

It's just a matter of degree - and laws and Constitutions will not protect the individual.

For example:

Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?

Bush: I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.

Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?

Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.

Sherman (somewhat taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?

Bush: Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is the function of religions to decimate those who do not share THEIR faith or at least evangelise them and reduce them - and it always has been.

I'm not big on religion myself. But I haven't heard of any citizens living in a civilized country facing the death penalty for bad mouthing another religion.

I mean let's call a spade a spade. What this woman is facing goes to show just how backwards and barbaric some Muslim country's are...and it's scary thinking that we are almost in the year 2011 and they are still living in the 17th century.
