An investigator from U.S. Office Of Personnel Manehement Federal investigative services left a card on my door

Sorry for asking this here but my husband is traveling and I do not know where to ask this. I returned home this afternoon and someone left a card on my door. It says something like this: It is necessary that I speak with you regarding an individual who is being considered for a position of trust with the U.S. Government. Your comments regarding this individual's fitness and suitability will be greatly appreciated. Wonder if it's legitimate? Should I open the door if he returns tomorrow. What could this be? P.S. It also says regarding your neighbors job. It does not have my name on it just my address resident. Please help. I am so panicky. :crying:

It could be. Years ago I was called by an agency within the military because a former coworker was being considered for a security clearance and they were doing the background check.

Of course it could be a savvy private investigator or collection agent too.

If you are not sure of the person's credential ask for an ID and an office contact number. Then do some verification on your own.

It is not mandatory for you to open the door - it says it would be greatly appreciated, so it is not something you HAVE to do. If you are worried in any way about it, just say no, it is a perfectly legitimate response when you are home alone. Frankly, I find it a bit strange someone left a card with that written on it.

It does sound like it could be legitimate though. I know our neighbour who is in the military notified us that we may be contacted by an investigator when he was being considered for a high security position asking about him and reassuring us that it was legitimate.

I'm moving this from Removal of Conditions forum to Off Topic as it doesn't appear to relate to a Removal of Conditions immigration situation.

Definitely ask for the person's ID and credentials. However, it could be legitimate. Several years ago my mom had the sheriff's department knock on her door because one of her neighbor's grown children was being considered for a sheriff's position and they were checking up on his history with all of the people who had lived around him while he was a teenager/young adult (they even tracked down several who had moved away). So some agencies do check up on people like that.

See my timeline for my K-1 and AOS/EAD/AP details.

I searched Google, found nothing, then I went to the OPM site & searched:

Its not just the military that does this. Some years ago a friend of mine applied for a position at a payroll processing firm (Paycheck, ADP - that kind of company) and he needed to provide character references and I had an investigator come by my place to talk to me about him.

They do the same thing here at VJ before someone is given a moderator position.

I hear they got lost looking for Charles' farm in the backcountry. That's why his deputy to full promotion is still pending.

Thank you all. I asked my husband way before posting here. He has not applied for any government jobs. Will see if he shows up again. So it's ok for me to not open the door, yes?
