Take his original birth certificate with You. I'm from california and they wanted to see it. Not a translation. They told me they have their own translators if it was necessary. EAD for a K-1 to get a SSN is not a necessity.

When Claudeth applied for hers (two weeks after she arrived in the U.S.) it was very easy and took about 10 days from the filing to receive the card. Good luck

The BC, passport and I-94 is all that's needed and as previously posted take the original documents.

If they want to translate the BC it will have to be done by an SSA authorized translator. I would try to have them accept another document to verify his age if they want to translate the BC. Tell them you don't have time to wait for the translation and ask that they use the passport, unless that also needs to be translated.

RM 00203.040 Reviewing SSN Evidence

3. Foreign Language Documents

The following chart explains the steps to take if a document is in a foreign language.

If...

The applicant has no immediate need for an and the translation can be done promptly, or the foreign language document is the only evidence available.

Then ...

Have the document translated by an authorized translator (see GN 00301.340) and use the document as evidence.

If...

The applicant has a pressing need for an SSN, and evidence other than the foreign language document is available.

Then ...

Request other evidence. Process the application without the foreign language document.

RM 00203.110 Evidence of Age for an SSN Card

H. Procedure – Foreign-Born Applicant Applies for an Original SSN Card or to Change the DOB on the Numident Record

If a foreign-born person has the foreign BC in his/her possession or can readily obtain (i.e, within 10 days) a properly certified copy, ask him/her to submit it. Be aware that if the person is foreign-born, a BC may not exist, may not have been recorded shortly after birth, or the probative value of the document may not be high. See GN 00307.140 and GN 00307.145. In these situations, accept alternative evidence of age in order of probative value. The alternative evidence of age may be less than a year old (e.g., a U.S. immigration document).

Ask for alternative evidence of age in order of probative value from the groups of documents in RM 00203.110D.

Review for authenticity the evidence submitted according to the guidelines in RM 00203.040. See GN 00307.000 for instructions about evaluating foreign evidence.
