Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen has died.

Family confirmed to Global News that Nielsen died Sunday afternoon in a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, hospital from complications of pneumonia. He was 84.

Nielsen appeared in more than 100 movies, with the star shining perhaps most brightly in comedies including Airplane! and The Naked Gun.

His father was a Mountie and the actor moved around as child, growing up in Regina, Edmonton and towns in northern Canada. His brother, Erik — who died two years ago, also at age 84 — was a former Conservative MP for Yukon and deputy prime minister under Brian Mulroney.

The TV and film actor received the Order of Canada at Ottawa’s at Rideau Hall in December 2003.

Nielsen appeared in some of the most iconic television programs in history, including M*A*S*H, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Hawaii Five-O, Columbo and Murder, She Wrote.

However, he may be most recognizable for his comedic big-screen roles. In Airplane! Nielsen uttered an often-quoted retort to the question: “Surely, you can’t be serious?”

“I am serious . . . and don’t call me Shirley,” he said.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Sadly, I am. And don't call me Shirley.

Thanks for bringing up the room. The way some are offering up RIP's and (F)'s here, you would think a president died or something. It was Leslie Nielsen, folks, so act accordingly. Why not repeat some of his most funny lines. Hey, he was in a hospital, what is it? A big building with patients, beds and doctors, but there is no time for that now...

Call him Leslie, but not Shirley!

He wasn't bad as a serious actor but side-splitting as a sight-gag specialist.
