I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with flying their pet(s) from Europe to the US?

My husband and I have been looking for a dog for a looong time, and it has been my life long dream to own a Saarlooswolfhond... There is one small problem with that breed though; it's a Dutch breed and almost all the breeders are in Holland, Belgium or Germany. I found a breeder in Holland who wouldn't mind selling me a pup that would fly to the US, but I am worried about flying the pup here. (Amsterdam - Portland, OR = 10.5 hours, direct flight).

I hear for some countries you need a 6 month quarantine period, but I don't think you have that rule for the US.

The pup would be 8-9 weeks old... I've heard of people flying pups before, but that was from the East coast to Holland (6-8 hours).

So far I have found out that you need:

- European pet passport

- a rabies shot

- up to date with their shots

Does anyone have experience with this?

And if you do, what did you have to fill out? :)

Topic moved FROM Off Topic TO Europe & Eurasia ( except the UK and Russia ).

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Look on the webpages off the aircompangies, they all have seperate sections for pets.

All the requirements are on there.

It ain`t that easy but it`s like our visatrip... very good reading!!!!

If you`re not in Holland a special agent has to do this for you but it`s quite spendy.

I flew in 5 dogs from here (NL) to the US as extended suitcases (this is cheaper)

the dogs where all fine and had a good trip but they where adults a puppy needsa good bath

after you`ll recieve it.

The most impotant thing is a healthcertificate from a vet that`s not older then 10 day`s.

I wouldn`t let the puppy get chipped because the chip they use in the USA isn`t the same as an european

chip( they can`t read the european ones, my dogs are all chipped twice)

For the passport a dog needs to be chipped, so you'll have to have it chipped no matter what in the Netherlands. Mine are chipped in Spain and the Netherlands and our vet here in Pennsylvania can read the chips.

Yes, read the rules from the company you are flying with.

Are you or another person flying with the puppy?

How big will it be?

If it is still very young and not too big you may be able to bring it with you in the cabin, if not, you have to look at the temperatures also, above and below certain temperatures they won't fly pets.

Also find out what the rules are for importing a dog in Portland, rules differ per state and for some states you need a license.
