I'm still waiting for someone to explain our vital national interest there worth risking war.

They were a very vital national interest after WWII and during the cold war. My father fought there and was severely injured twice there and he was one of the lucky ones as he made it back alive. SK has been a friend a long time to us and stuck by us for a long time also. When we needed a friend to stick with us they were always among the first to stand up and be counted. They have never questioned why we wanted to go to war or why are doing something but they just tell us they are with us. They are true friends and one can never have enough of them. We came to them when they needed us and many good Americans died for them and they are one of the few that has never forgotten that.

I was also stationed there for almost two years and was even severely injured there. That DMZ is a dangerous place and no one ever hears about the crazy stuff that happens on both sides all the time. I had made many good friends while there that I still talk to. My ex wife was also Korean. I still have both fond memories and frightful memories from that place. I can say truly I love and hate the place.

Now ask yourself this. If your true friend that has been with you through thick and thin and all between all of a sudden needed you then what would you do?

Good post.

I don't think it's wise to play this role of becoming indebted or obligated to countries which hold no real national interest for us.

If SK has infact played a role in our national defense, it was never big enough to outweigh what we would have to give in their support.

SInce you followed this American/ SK relationship perhaps more than I have... tell me how many men did they Loose in Vietnam, Iraq, Afgan?

Here is the figures for the Vietnam. After I have my nightly chat and cam session with my wife I will search for other figures that you could do yourself. Later.

The contemporary features of the Republic of Korea were forged in its most formative years in the anvil of war, financed by Americans, in the jungles of Vietnam. Adjusted for population, a greater number of Koreans fought in the Vietnam War as their American counterparts. 312,853 Koreans were dispatched as combatants and another 100,000 Koreans resided in Vietnam during the war involved in various civilian enterprises. 4,687 Koreans died in that war according to the Korean Ministry of Defense. But no official casualty figures including the total number of Koreans missing and wounded have ever been released.

SK has indeed been a great friend and more than a few Americans have already made the ultimate sacrifice in their defense. And yes Danno the reverse is true, many Koreans have died for us as well.

Well put indeed Txn!
