I am filling out the application for a ssn and I am not sure if i should use my new married name or the name on my passport...so basically my maiden name?

You should have applied before you were married with your maiden name because sometimes the office is really difficult about letting you get a SSN in your married name when it doesn't match the immigration records.

If I were you I would apply in your maiden name first and then change it. It should be significantly easier to get a SSN in your maiden name because it matches your immigration records. If you wanna try in your married you can.

You won't really be using your SSN for anything like drivers licence or work until you get an EAD and when you get your EAD you can return to the SSA and change the name on your SSN really easy.

Again totally up to you. Hopefully your office knows their rules and knows it can be in your married name.. but only when you try will you find out.

First thing, you don't need to complete a Form SS-5. The person waiting on you will enter the info into the computer based on the evidence you provide and the questions they ask you.

If the person knows what they are doing it shouldn't matter if you apply with your maiden or married name. However, it seems when it comes to K-1s we are still searching for that person. LOL Having the SSN is more important than the name on the card, so I would try with the maiden name after you have been here at least ten days, and hope you have enough time left of your K-1 status to try for the name change after you are married.

One good thing that has happened, if the SSA office needs to send a G-845 due to immigration requesting to see the immigration document, the SSA office no longer needs to wait for the G-845 to be mailed back to the office. The SSA office now gets the response electronically. This if done correctly by the SSA office can save a couple weeks on getting the verification done. So this might mean a lot to a K-1 getting close to the magical 76th day after entry, and waiting on the SSA to verify status before the SSN can be assigned, or replacement card issued.
