Congrats on the visa! You can apply for his SSN now, although it may take up to 2 weeks to get his name in the system. It took about a month to finally receive it. To get a state ID you probably need to have his SSN first. My husband got his but it was noted on the ID that it was temporary since he did not have a green card yet. Once we married, filed AOS and received the GC he went back to change his ID to a permanent one and also had to go back to the SS Office to adjust his SS card.

He can apply for a SSN now but if he does not have the EAD, his SS card will be stamped as not eligible to work. But after he gets the EAD, he can change that. He might decide to get he EAD first and then apply for a SSN just so he does not need to have the stamp on his SS card. He would need a SSN to get an ID in most states, check your state's requirements.

Wrong Someone applying with K-1 status and using the I-94 and someone applying with an EAD card, are issued the same type of card “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” You have to be a permanent resident, or U.S. citizen to be issued an unrestricted card.

My friend brought his fiancée back in April and that was their exact situation with the Social Security Card.

I am not sure if this is an option for you-but I had two friends recently moved here-who were married to foreigners and went through the K2 visa. One clicked the, mail the social security card to me, the other said they'd pick it up. It was 2 months difference with the one in the mail getting it very late. I am not sure if it's because I am in Maryland where the Social Security Admin is??? But they obviously didn't go there, they just went to the state social security one in Baltimore. Just thought I'd share that with you.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

An I-94 isn't a stamp. It's a white card that is usually stapled (or at least placed) in the passport at PoE. It will have a long number at the top, and will also show the beneficiary's name and visa type. It will have an expiry date, which for a K-1 visa will be 90 days after the day the beneficiary entered.

DON'T PANIC

K-2 is the child of a K-1. SSN cards are all mailed from SSA Headquarters. It sounds like you are talking about Enumeration At Entry and that is not an option for any type of K visa.

Yes, take the passport, I-94 and a birth certificate if you have one handy. The I-94 is evidence of employment authorization. The I-94 with the passport is evidence of identity. They may accept the passport as evidence of age, otherwise, you need the birth certificate.
