Travel Plans from Nigeria, transit questions

Hi everyone, my fiance was approved and now we are looking at flights. All the reasonably priced ones have a place of transit, be it in Ethiopia, Qatar, Morocco, Turkey etc. I am wondering within this transit, do they have to re-go through security and such, as the times seem very fast 2 hours etc. We know he needs a transit visa-so does that mean he has to go through customs too?

Can someone help me out. I thought all the worrying was done after he got approved. I just don't want him stuck somewhere and not able to get here due to not checking all my facts.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!!!

You do not need a transit visa, as long as he does not leave the airport. And he only goes through customs at his destination, that is as soon as he enters the US. I'm not as experienced, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The need for transit visas vary by country. Some DO require Nigerians to have them even with the Nigerian isn't leaving the airport. Some will waiver this if the Nigerian is traveling to/from Nigeria with a valid US resident visa, some do not require it if the traveler doesn't leave the airport. 2 hours is usually the minimum time recommended, Usually your bags are checked through but they will reinspect your "travel papers" to make sure you are good to go to the next destination.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Dear M, in my opinion I would take the direct flight from Lagos to Atlanta on Delta. It is a direct, one-way flight and you will not need a transit visa, which adds even more expense and headache. In Lagos they recognize the K-1 visa (in some countries, they say you have to have a round-trip ticket for K-1 since it is "non-immigrant"). I have taken this flight and it is great, even if it is a bit more expensive, you are going to have peace of mind, knowing that he will get here without any trouble. The POE in Atlanta is also supposedly a breeze. Save yourself extra expense on a transit visa and pay the extra to fly Delta, seriously. You will sleep better. :)

P.S. If he is coming from Abuja, just have him take a domestic flight from Abuja to Lagos on Dana Air or Arik Air or the other one I think it's Air Nigeria. If you have any other questions message me.

depending on your wallet if you go through the listed airlines you dont need any transit visa all you need is your final destination proof, your luggage will automatically be transferred for the onward journey.

if you go through royal air maroc once you land they will recheck you in for your onward journey same as the rest so keep calm and never worry.

however if you have the opportunity to buy delta that will be fine and save you from transfers.

save trip whichever one .

Thanks guys-Delta is actually over $1000 more expensive, he is fine with one trip layover and is going to get a transit visa, then he flies straight to me-in D.C.

I think that's the best solution. I am a PhD student-and he obviously won't be able to work for a bit, so we need to save money-and $1000 seems too much.

Has anyone on here had their fiance's actually do a transfer-and if so how did it go? We are lucky as Americans and never need transit visa's staying inside the country-so I didn't even know this was an issue until I looked into it a bit more. Still unclear if he needs it-he will ask today when getting the ticket.....I hope and pray :)

NigeriaorBust- thanks for that info, so no transit visa was needed we found out for us. So for your fiance-he just went to the next airplane- and was checked through security when Joseph went through the transit country? What airline did he fly?

Also note to others-POE is Point of Entry to the UNITED STATES, not other countries-unless they are going there for some reason which wouldn't be part of the K1 visa. So everyone's POE is in AMERICA, it's just if they have to go then another leg after their POE to get to where you are. For us that is not an issue, I live in Maryland, so Washington DC will be his POE and I will be on the other side-and there will be no other legs of the trip. Just one switch in another country and then straight to me is our plan. That's worth saving a couple thousand dollars. I have done it many times and many switches throughout various countries-no big deal at all, but I am American-that's why I am asking for advice for OTHERS who have had their fiance's go through a transit country (meaning they switch airplanes)-that seems to be a confusion to many here.
