Paul said second hand smoke causes no harm and that there is no proof that smoking is hazardous to your health or those around you. He said that it is the government telling us that. And you have implied similar in your posts. I really don't whether you smoke or not, my sole point in this discussion is that smoking is harmful to one's health and that it is utterly foolish to suggest that there are no proven long term consequences.

Paul is a right wing kool aid drinker like Steven is a left wing one. My mother knew smoke was bad for you 60 years ago and didn't need an expensive study to tell her that. If it makes you cough, it probably isn't really all too good for you. That kind of sense is what comes out of west Texas prairie fires. Of course I didn't listen to my mother and smoked for many years because I AM about freedom of choice. I chose not to smoke in the house with my children. I figure that is my responsibility as a FATHER (yeah, we DO have some responsibilities, really!)

Amazing how individual freedom and individual responsibility go together. So I was still smoking outside when I keeled over with a heart attack and after a quad by-pass I quit smoking and paying all that tax. I never did any studies to determine if my heart attack was smoking related. So maybe it wasn't.

Still it is a silly argument, politically speaking, and the Repubs ought to just call the Dems bluff and say "OK, bad stuff, let's ban it!" The dems will object because of the tax revenue loss and we can go back to individual responsibility.

Paul, when you try to argue smoking isn't bad for people, you sound silly. It IS bad, I just believe you ought to be able to smoke if you are an adult and choose to do so, because...you are an adult and choose to do so.

Gary, you conveniently name call when it suits you. You also plead your ignorance in not reading what I posted in this thread and taking what a troll like Spooks says seriously.

If you know anything about the way I post and you read what I say, you know damn well I am anything but 'right wing' like Steven's "left wing" #######.

Paul, the ONLY thing the government can do is BAN something or TAX something. There really is nothing much in between. Taxing cigarettes has nothing to do with how bad they are. I used to smuggle my cigs in from Ukraine at 80 cents per pack and they were just as bad for me.

All this funding of studies is nonsense and a waste of our tax dollars. Smoke is bad for you, There. I said it, for FREE.

The rest is about whether we tax it or not. The Dems propose tax to reduce smoking and then say they will pay for healthcare programs for children with the money. If the tax works, the kids are in deep doo-doo, right? Why PLAN to pay for something with a tax "designed" to be self limiting?

Cigarette smoking IS (or should be) a CHOICE made by adults. It should not be a political issue, because it is not and never has been a political issue, it is only MADE to look like a political issue so one party can TAX it and the other party can FIGHT against the tax. The BEST way to eliminate the tobacco TAX would be to eliminate tobacco!

The dems will quickly come to the rescue of tobacco, the Repubs can drop the proposal and the fight is over. Any time the Dems propose a new tax, the Repubs should add an amendment to the tax bill banning tobacco and the Dems will kill the bill.

Here is how it works...

The Dems in Vermont proposed a bill to ban cell phone use in cars. OK! The Repubs went along. Then ADDED an amendment to also ban radios, food of any kind, drinks of any kind...etc. The Dems voted against the bill and it was abandoned. Job done.

If it's for certain, that smoking kills..... how do we explain this

Paul is right that it doesn't kill everyone and some people do smoke their entire lives and not get lung cancer. How old was George Burns? Overall, it isn't good for you and that was the point I was trying to make. And I agree with Gary that politics should have nothing to do with it. If an adult wants to do things that are harmful to them whether it be smoking, drinking, bull running, free climbing, etc, then they should be able to. As long as they aren't endangering anyone else.

So I shouldn't be able to burn my leaves.... lest I harm my neighbor?

The Anti smoking crowd is way hypersensitive IMO.

Granted no one should be forced to work in a cubical with a chain smoker but banning smoking off the entire college campus ... or city park is beyond reason.

I'd like to burn some toxic chemicals in the backyard adjacent to Danno's house when he's having a barbeque.

I'm sure he wouldn't mind. If it's only for a few hours, no harm done.

I don't know where you're from, but there is no leave burning where I come from, brush burning during the burning season, but no leaves.

They are indeed. I think people who are adults should be able to choose. I think businesses should be able to choose if they allow smoking or not. I think, nowadays, it would be a wise decision to be smoke free but if someone wants to go out of business ...who cares? If you don;t like second hand smoke...go to another restaraunt. Definitely something the free market can handle.

Again, the government should either ban the dangerous product or leave it alone. Taxing it does not make it safe for anyone. Choosing FOR people and choosing one group of people over another is wrong. Let the market decide.

Steve who are you kidding...your fellow dupes will soon have it so Danno can't even use his BBQ, from what I understand fireplaces and wood stoves and BBQ's are now in the sites of the totalitarian Left.

Sounds like you're ok with me burning some toxic chemicals in the backyard next to your house while you barbeque. Why, that's very neighborly of you. If your testicles fall off you can marinade them on throw them on the barby. Who's gonna know, right?
