Do you think that in general smoking isn't harmful? It's just a brainwashing by the government? Medical research hasn't proved anything? Could you provide a few credible sources?

Define 'in general.' Are a majority of smokers susceptible to becoming ill, then generally yes. However, the rate at which they will get sick (or not ever get sick) varies depending on the individual. We're talking about even individuals who smoke the exact same way as their counterparts....

Is 'second-hand' smoke 'in general' harmful? Not really... Can things in the body be triggered by second-hand smoke? Sure they can, just as someone who works in a factory with constant fumes can have issues as well. Is a waitress working in a restaurant for a few years going to be harmed by second-hand smoke? Not unless she has something already wrong with her immune system that is not on the surface level already. A perfectly healthy individual is not going to be harmed in any way though.

someone just posted this on fb and it made me think of this thread

75775_1687582225397_1112935397_1827928_2049406_n.jpg

asthma is more common in kids (mainly because of allergies) than in adults, but when it shows up later in life (mine showed up in my late teens) it is more commonly diagnosed in people who smoke (I don't smoke) or who were exposed to secondhand smoke. I don't know for sure but I do know asthma commonly runs in families (they haven't identified all the genes for it yet, but are fairly sure people have at least a genetic predisposition) and no one else in my family has ever had and type of respiratory problems or asthma. I am the only one of 3 kids who he smoked around and the only one with any type of respiratory problems. I don't remember where I read it, but there was a study somewhere in the US and they found that when asthma runs in a family then genetics has more to do with it, but when it doesn't run in the family the environment has more to do with it.

are you a smoker?

no. i social smoked in England's pubs many years ago, but i knew if i didn't quit, it would definitely kill me early in life.

i'm just anti fear mongering... the pols, nonprofits and commerical interests try to make people fear things they really should not fear at all. fear based marketing ticks me off.

i think people should get as far away from second hand smoke because it stinks. if you can stand the smell, i seriously doubt it is going to have a major effect on most people. we have ruled out smoking in most workplaces so most people are not trapped in places they can not escape second hand smoke.

one city here in CA has outlawed smoking in apartments... private apartments! in san francisco, they have banned smoking in public parks.

no wonder abortion rights folks don't want to give in to any law curtailing abortion, once it starts, they don't want to quit. you know, here in CA, a 14 year old can get an abortion without parental consent, but she does if going to the dentist. 14 year old can't drink beer, but can get an abortion, can't see an R rated movie but can get an abortion... wow! what's the harm in drinking a beer if you don't have a drivers license or a glass of wine while having dinner with your parents? i'm not saying teens should be drinking... just saying if they can get an abortion on their own, they should be able to drink.

sorry, didn't mean to get started on abortion. i'm actually on the fence when it comes to abortion... kind of don't care either way but still a good example of stupidity.

You might as well have just admitted to being a Bolshevik. You just lost all credibility with the know-nothing crowd. You know they don't trust people who know stuff and read books.

Amby probably does her studying and research in a lab that gets federal grant money. Sucking at the teat of the taxpayer then having the nerve to voice an opinion. For shame, Amby!

That's even worse than being a Bolshevik.

She is clearly part of the Blame America First crowd.

Interesting isn't it that America's for-profit life insurance companies long ago made it their business to ask applicants if they smoke, and to charge much higher premiums for the additional risk of death they pose. Are we seriously still having this conversation in 2010?

I'm looking for a study that shows second hand smoke isn't harmful but I can't find one. The only thing I'm finding that is even close is studies that compare "lifelong exposure" and "brief exposure". I posted the one on how even brief exposure is harmful.

There was one where they did an MRI on the lungs of smokers and non-smokers who were exposed to second hand smoke and it showed that smokers had more damage but people who were exposed to second hand smoke had the same type of damage but not as much.

Thanks for replying!

While searching for stuff on second hand smoke I found a short term study done in a rural CA town that banned smoking in public spaces. I skimmed over it so I don't know all the details, but it did say there were less people who came into their ER with a heart attack in the 6 months after the public smoking ban than in the months prior to it.

So you would have no problem exposing your children to second hand smoke on a constant basis, ie, smoking in the car, house etc., even if they were infants? And you honestly believe that this causes no harm?

He is on record saying he hates people so I doubt he'd have kids. After all, they'll just grow up to be people.

Do you realize how many children in my generation and the previous generation had those exact conditions growing up and are perfectly healthy as can be?

If any of you need a good cleaning agent to get rid of tough grease and grime, mix equal parts of ammonia and bleach. The resulting gas will not harm you, it's a myth started by the Democrats.

i'd not recommend that anyone do that - it's a toxic gas. :bonk:

can you give me a link to a study or statistics that shows the death rate fom smoking and second hand smoke related diseases has stayed the same as it was before smoking bans were put in place? everything I've read shows a significant derease.
