Good luck with your box and get it out ASAP if you want to make it in time for Xmas. I looked back at my records and I did send a package EMS service last year around the middle of DEC. Didn't get there until middle of Jan.

The service looked like it came to a hault around New Years/Xmas time there. That's why I sent my Xmas gift 2 weeks ago

I usually throw in a bunch of over the counter cold medicine and other stuff from the phramacy isle. That's what she ask for. For those with wives here, what types of meds do they like that they didn't have back home? Airborne is one of her favs.

My wife always buys a ton of medicinal things when we visit. One in particular is a nasty green antibiotic liquid she puts on cuts, scratches, etc. Stains everything green. Awful stuff IMO but she loves it. She also gets some acne medicine made up at the Aptika for our 15 year old. It is basically a topical antibiotic. She buys a lot of other over the counter items, usually the same as we can get here but it is MUCH cheaper there. Betadine wash, for example, is about $1 per bottle there compared to about $8 here for a generic one. She also buys a year's supply of contact lenses and gets an eye exam cheaper than I can order the same lenses on the internet.

We have a Russian store here that sells all that stuff. Pretty cheap, too.

My box arrived today. Took 11 total days from Moscow. No duties were charged on my end and it was never opened.

Are they fond of any western meds? Be careful of the cheap Russian meds here, some of it could be knockoffs.

We have a large Asian population here. It's common for the Chinese stores in the states to sell watered down stuff or outright fakes of the imported stuff. I'm sure the Russkies do the same.

Are you serious? They had this stuff during the Soviet Union! We copied from THEM!

Alla is not fond of ANY medicine, though I can get her to take ONE Exedrin when she has a headache (very rare) She prefers to treat illness with soup and hot baths and buckwheat porridge, smelly stuff soaked on fabric and wrapped around her neck, etc.

My girl doesn’t like to take medicine either. Even when she’s sick with the flu….That’s why I’m asking what type of products they’re ok with using once here. She’s willing to try some American products so I sent her a bunch of DayQuil gel caps, Vick vapor rub, Airborne and such to prepare for the winter.

In my work cubicle, I have a mini bar of meds… I’m prepared for everything since people like to come in sick

For the fake stuff, check out the Gillette Mach3 razors on Ebay. They’re all Chinese fakes. Bluetooth headsets are another common one. They both look spot on that people never know they’re getting fakes.

Alla would not take any of that stuff, all joking aside. Listen carefully....they think sitting on a bench outside will destroy their reproductive organs! They think cold drinks make you sick.

I am diabetic and Alla thinks I do not need insulin, just eat buckwheat (FSU proven to lower blood sugar) and pickles all my life. She is convinced the entire medical system in the US is a front organization for pharmaceutical companies. I get her agrravated when she tells me not to eat something, do something, drink something, etc. because "it is bad for you". I tell her "I have a pill for that"

Package advice:

They apparently like things to "add up" correctly, so if you declare 18 items on customs form, if you send 19 they just take the 19th item. I didn't have an extra customs form and added an item that wasn't on shipping form, and sure enough .. it was not in the box when my relatives got the box. :)

Merry Xmas Post office man in FSU !

I don't know if that's just for "extra" items. It's been pretty typical that anything cool or interesting can come up missing.

We ALWAYS use Express Mail to send parcels to Novosibirsk. Not one (over 40 so far) has been lost or stolen. All take an absurdly long time -- 3 - 6 weeks to get delivered. There's no Express in Express Mail. Typically there is a gap of a week after the parcel leaves the USA before it turns up in Moscow. We've known parcels to circle the North Pole for up to three weeks. Whenever a parcel doesn't have an update for more than a week, we call USPS and start a search. For the past 3 years or so, we call USPS 100% of the time.

We rely heavily on the tracking number that Express Mail provides. Its the only benefit of the increased cost. Next time my wife is in Russia, she's going to have a chat with the folks at the post in Novosibirsk on why there's no "express" in Express Mail. The problem seems to be more in Moscow, though.
