Regarding the Lennon/McCartney team as part of the Beatles,

the whole was definitely greater than the sum of it's parts.

After the breakup, I felt that Paul's creative path was just trying to be

a commercial success (and that he was, but still fell short of Beatle popularity).

John on the other hand was madly in love with a wife that the world

perceived as the DEVIL. His feelings toward her were often ambivalent but in

the end he recognized her importance to him. When he got shot everything

seemed to have been coming together in both his artistic and family life.

His public "persona" was definitely that of a raving lunatic but a lunatic that

we all loved dearly, much as the brooding Hamlet was loved.

I didn't always subscribe to his politics, but he was a force of nature that couldn't be ignored.

I don't see John as a lunatic. He had a lot of issues as has any man that needs to play act being a naked baby to an older woman when he is age 40, but he was very sane in other matters despite that. 'Imagine no possessions' sung by a very rich person was somewhat hypocritical and Johnny Rotten is down that same path nowadays with his entourages and his $22,000 teeth while preaching about the street people's needs and how basic he is.

I can see a lot of my nastier side in John and that is why I don't like him

I can see a gentle side to Paul that I aspire to but can never quite achieve. I believe he did clip Heather's lug hole but I bet she drove him to it and he is only human and not a cardboard cut out...

You're right he did have a very nasty side.

He was a genius, a lunatic and a man of peace who did have anger problems.

He was a lousy husband and father and a great husband and father depending

on where he happened to be and who he happened to be with.

He alternately reveled in and cursed the notariety derived from being an ex-Beatle.

Paul wasn't a saint either but maybe he got the reputation of being the "good"

Beatle because of the obvious contrasts with John.

You don't have to like John, that's what free speech is all about.

There's much about him that I never liked.

I was a big fan of the Jefferson Airplane, but their drug-culture was something I never participated in or praised.

Some of the best music in the 60's was made under the influence of drug abuse.

Some of the best music before that was made under the influence of alcohol.

What we tend to forget is that John died at 40 and before he became mature. My son is 40 and very misguided and I was a bit wild at 42 when I was single with my big Merc and Director status and wad. OK a lot wild.

People think that age 21 is when people become adults and figure out how it all works. I think it's more likely to be on one's death bed at 90

40 is nothing and John had a lot to learn

as for students....

Youth is wasted on the young.

When I was in college I was in the middle of the anti-war & drug scene but I pretty much ignored the first

because most of the student leaders were more full of themselves than actually having something to say

and I avoided the second because the most popular drug was grass and I always developed a chronic

cough when near to anyone that was smoking anything. I also didn't have the money for any kind of

expensive habit as most of the funds I paid my student fees with were obtained by my working for them.

Neither one of those facts prevented me from enjoying whatever kind of music I wanted to enjoy.

I was a born again youth and didnt go to college until I was 26 and already had a wife and two kids.

When I was training in the Police at age 19 the instructor held up a cube of pot and set fire to it so we could recognize it's smell. Absolute cow dung man and we nearly threw up.

Later my revulsion was turned against the sort of people who used it and sold it so that it wasn't so much the drug as the kind of people that one had to mix with in order to get it. Rich or poor, I never met one user that I liked.

Even nowadays, I go to Tenerife and they are all using it - runaways, credit card fraudsters, cocaine dealers, time share touts, fugitives from tax or maintenence or the police - and the decadent rich on their yachts trying to seduce their 19 year old bimbos. The whole drug scene revolts me.

Yes alcohol is a drug but one meets a far wider spectrum of society with some decidedly fine people - that is, in addition to the bar flies and dead-beats and wife bashers.

If they legalize pot it will make my life easier because I would just have to sniff to know who I am not going to like. It would save me a lot of time.
