Hello all. I've loved reading the stories up here about how people have met and are working hard to be together, so I thought I'd contribute to the conversation. I was embarrassed for awhile to tell my friends how David and I (Georgia) met, but in this last year or so I snapped out of it and realized I didn't have a thing to be shy about :)

It began in the summer of 2006. A friend of mine, we'll call him M, told me about a forum he and friend of his (B, who I later became good friends with) posted on. Being the duo of nerds they are, it was a World of Warcraft Off Topic forum, meaning an off-shoot of the official WoW forums. I was apprehensive as I'd never played before but confident in that I was very familiar with the culture. So, I began posting. After a very short while one poster in particular stood out to me.

He would post hip-hop lyrics of one of my favourites, Slug, and so he peaked my interest, "maybe this forum isn't all shut in goons after all" I would think. I began replying to his ridiculous spam threads, and he eventually noticed me. He got a hold of me on AIM and proceeded to spam me on there, but I always found it funny as all hell, and eventually we started having real conversations about ourselves, family life, where we were in our lives, etc. A relationship started to develop, and our first phone conversation cost him I think $150 (he had recently moved back home briefly before joining the Navy - his mother was not pleased). We both liked each other's physical appearances, and so I suppose that helped feed our budding relationship as well :hehe: Throughout bootcamp we maintained that relationship, although troubled at times on my part, and afterwards we drifted apart due to me making the immature decision to get a boyfriend in the city because I was unsure of where David and I would go.

In October of 2008 I spent a week away from that boyfriend to really think about what I wanted: him or David. I was scared of the distance and the uncertainty, but I knew what I wanted, and it would be dishonest to stay with my current boyfriend. I broke up with him and told David I was ready. In early November we decided to make things official, and committed ourselves to each other. It has now been officially just over 2 years of being together after being in contact with him since 2006 :)

The toughest part was telling my mother. I remember sitting her down, 19 at the time, and telling her, "I've met someone online, we've been talking for a long time now and I'd like to meet him". To my surprise she handled it amazingly, and absolutely supported me. She herself had been in two long distance relationships with men from Germany, so she knew how I felt, and that she would sound hypocritical if she said no. And at the time I didn't know, but the company credit card is linked to her, and so with that American Express card, she could transfer points to Aeroplan. Neither I or David has paid for a single flight (besides taxes). This is HUGE because I would have never been able to fly that much while also having spending money (student + part time work = no money).

Since our first visit in February 2009, things have been amazing and very hard, but we've both put every ounce of elbow grease and hard work into making our relationship work. Now that I'm almost done my degree, I'm 21, and he and I both are starting to plan the next step in our relationship I feel like all the tears and sad goodbyes were worth it, like I always told him they would be. We're more optimistic than ever and can't wait to begin our next chapter together, wherever it leads :star:

This picture was taken a week ago while he was here, and I think it accurately shows our youthful disregard for taking nice keepsake photos.

Adorable :) Welcome to VJ :D

My (now) husband and I met playing WoW, and so have a lot of people I know on this site. Another girl I know met on a forum for lovers of the Matrix movies. Never be embarrassed of how you met. It's a totally unique story to tell your grandkids or nieces or nephews or whatever :D The internet age has changed a LOT about "regular" lives and "we met in a bar" isn't nearly as common anymore!

I agree completely.

I met my husband on World of Warcraft, there are very few people who do not know how we met as we never really cared what anyone thought.. My Nana was the one I worried about reacting badly but she took it the best and Absolutely loves my Husband (I think she likes him more then me )

Think about how many people use "phone chats" or eharmony etc, you fell in love with someone from another country and had NO intention. It wasn't something you were looking for, it just happened :) Which is the best part, somehow you were lead to that place on that very first day to met that very person and Bammmm now yall are in love. Be proud :)

Aw, such a cute story. Ours is very similar, and the hardest part was DEFINITELY telling my parents about him. But they were great about it, and eeeeeeeeeeeeverything has been worth it so far. Good luck to you guys :star:

Thank you for sharing such your sweet story. I know exactly what you are talking about when you said about telling others about how you met him. I am still very reserved about sharing my story with my closest friends. My parents are still not thrilled. :-/ Long distant relationships are not easy and take lots of work. But we do love each other and I cannot wait to have him with me and then introduce him once he's here! :) Then I'll be more than willing to share our story with my loved ones.

I met my fiance on a dating site. Never played WoW.. but I am so thankful that I found him regardless of the distance and the separation. I would rather have him this way, than settle for less. It's so nice to see all of the wonderful positive stories on this site!
