My wife just received her interview date for permanent residence. The letter says if she doesn't speak English bring a translator... Can I serve as the translator?

Called State Dept. after not hearing anything since Sept. 23: Packet reached the consulate and was kicked back for a secondary security clearance probably do to her type of employment - Waiting for clearance and for superpacket to be sent.

No you can't. I mistakenly said something to my hubby in my language and got scolded. She told me if I did it again then she would terminate the interview and deny our case. I think you need to get someone who is licensed or something.

Well, sometimes you do not need to translate into her language. When I was asked if she needed a translator I just stated I could help her to understand. I did not speak Thai with her but rephrased the questions so that it made sense to her. No problems and if you've spent a lot of time with your fiancee' you should be able to help her get through this. As an example she was asked in length if she had ever been convicted of a crime or something to that effect and I just said "Did you ever have trouble with police?". No problems.

They were not this way with us at all. We were worried about Lucero speaking in Spanish at the interview. Angelica ( my step daughter )speaks in both languages really well and the lady that did our interview encouraged Lucero ( my wife ) to make sure via Angelica that she understood the questions. The lady was not intimidated by Spanish. She just wanted to be sure that Lucero understood.

09 October 4th application package sent. This time they said the app signature page was a copy

10 Oct Sent package again 4th time.

25 Oct Received another NOA for Wife with $625 for the amount with one year extension

30 Oct 2008 Still nothing for step daughter. Checks still haven't cleared the bank

24 November Checks finally cleared the bank

February biometrics for wife Nothing for daughter.

Local Universities offer translators. For a fee of course. I would get one so you can just put this behind you. Also, try to get ahold of the Cuban community for help.

I am the Cuban community.... The thing is the interview is on the other side of the state and its very difficult to ask working people with families to take off work to sit in the car a couple of hours, sit in an interview not knowing how long they will be there, etc...

The problem with you being your wifes translator is that you can tell her how to answer the questions espeically if the interviewer doesnt understand your language. They just want to keep the interview honest.

I'm pretty sure I saw on here (before now) that spouses cannot act as translators. It's probably best to pony up the dough in obtaining a certified translator. All the best.
