Some day the oil supply will decline. It will take decades to wean off of oil. I see these cars as a step in the right direction and over the next 20 years we will see drastic improvement in the technologies involved. It has to start somewhere, and it should have started with the first oil crises back in 1973.

Outside of creating mini-generators that can constantly recharge themselves, nothing is going to change.

Battery technology is something that is very very limited and won't evolve into anything more than what it is in our lifetime.

Honestly if you want to win the day, you need to figure out how to use solar power to charge car batteries and then really start working on hydrogen cars. That's the best way to the future in the automobile industry...

+1 on the solar power. Look at what NASA does with solar power. Solar is probably the ideal solution as it doesn't do the damage to the environment like electric and gas. I've seen battery technology go from lead acid to alkaline to nicad, to nickel metal to lithium ion in my lifetime and I really haven't paid any attention to what lies on the horizon. The one thing I keep reading on the car batteries is that the price will continue to fall, making them more competitive with their gasoline counterparts.

It is already possible to have your home run on photovoltaic power and produce enough electricity to charge an electric vehicle in the garage. There are people out there that already have this set up.

There are so many ways that we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels - all it takes is the will to change the status quo.

I really think that when solar comes down in price that it will be a big part of our future. Again, look to Nasa for what can be done with solar technology.

not so much about will as it is about affordability. That and capabilities of such things must be equal to and/or greater than what's currently available.

You assume there's something wrong with your so-called 'status quo' in this situation to begin with though as well.

Of course the government is going to have to figure out a new way to tax the hell out of people if this 'status quo' goes away.... So no one will eventually be saving any money at all....

Realistically, nothing is going to be more affordable and as capable as fossil fuels immediately out of the gate. It will take time to bring the price of the new technology down. What's wrong with the status quo is that at some point in time these changes are going to become necessary and they aren't going to happen overnight. You have to start somewhere and we're already late. Perhaps we need another oil crisis or $200 barrel oil to remind us of this yet again.

They've been trying for a century and it hasn't worked... Without something comparable, nothing is going to succeed.

Yeah, bringing prices down takes time, but also encouraging investment is important too.

HDTV sold because there was a noticeable difference from SD. It pretty much sold itself for that reason. It was an impovement...

However, alternate fuel technology has yet to prove (at least to the wealthy) that it is in any way better. As long as a gasoline engine can out perform any other fuel type, then that's going to be the way things are. The best always wins the day and gets the wealthy on board to 'buy' the price down.

This is one situation where the Dems/Libs need to kiss ####### to the wealthiest of Americans and figure out an incentive for them....

Maybe when gasoline is $10 gallon the investors will notice? A gasoline engine may always outperform another fuel source, but what happens when the gasoline becomes a rare commodity? That's the problem with alternative fuels, not many give a damn about it now because at the moment it appears to be a minor problem. It will be a long road to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. There will never suddenly be a day when there is cheaper more efficient replacement for gasoline. It will take decades.
