passport question

hi all once again.

i requested a passport last week and asked to have it expedited. i am going to be away for a break for several days so my question is:

when you have your passport expedited, if you are not at home: do they leave it in your mail box? is a signature required or do i need to go to pick it up at the local post office? i was wondering if after 3 attempts or something they return it to the processing center.

what kind of envelope do they send the passport and the naturalization certificate in? is it one that might fit in your mail box? or is it one of these super stiff envelopes?

Who knows what is happening now, ours came in a stiff overnight envelop, had to sign for it, found the passport in one small corner and that is all that was in there. Extremely valuable naturalization certificate came in three days later in a thin envelop, first class, no signature required. Just jammed in our mailbox with all the other junk mail.
