Hi VJers,

Has anyone heard of World Education Services (wes.org) or similar organizations that help you translate your foreign degrees into US equivalents? I heard of this organization through a friend and wondered if anyone else has used it or heard of it or know other companies they can recommend. I really appreciate all your help in getting more information.

Thanks in advance!

There are at least a dozen credential evaluation companies in the US. Each specializes in differing areas. Don't hire one until you have been told by a specific institution which one they like.

For example, I had a teaching certificate in Canada. When I contacted the Utah State Office of Education to get a Utah teaching certification, they told me to get my Canadian education degree evaluated, using one of the four-to-six credential evaluation companies they list on their website. If I had jumped the gun, and gotten a credential evaluation from a different company, the Utah education office may very well have not accepted it.

Generally speaking, you will only need to get your degree evaluated if you are attempting to get a specific professional certification. Wait until the certifying institution tells you to get it done, and have it done by [one of] the specific company[ies] that specific institution likes.

DON'T PANIC

"It says wonderful things about the two countries [Canada and the US] that neither one feels itself being inundated by each other's immigrants."

Send an email to admin@facsusa.com (Foreign Academic Credential Services, Inc.) asking for what you need. I did and I was told they can convert your certificate to a US equivalent and it take 4-6 weeks to be sorted and it costs about a 100 USD. I am sure there are a whole bunch more sites but I was able to get the help I needed from there.

As to the original question, yes, WES is a reputable credential evaluation service. Many members have used them throughout the years.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I really appreciate it  . I will check into all the information you gave. We wanted a service that will make it easier to get his transcripts since he won't be there to get it himself from his school now.

Yep, wait and see which one they want! My school gave me list of places they would accept.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

When my husband applied at the University of Arizona, his first requirement for acceptance was taking the TOEFUL. He was

accepted and took his transcripts and his BS in Accounting degree from Alexandria University Egypt to his academic advisor.

The UofA did the credit transfers. He will graduate with a BA in Economics in May 2011. I'm sure it varies from University

to University on what credits they will accept, but at least there were no surprises and he knew exactly his course study.

Try http://www.naces.org/members.htm

They have a list with several accredited companies that do evaluations and you can pick according to your needs (i.e. employment or further education, certificates).

I was given this website from State employment office and did my own evaluations with $125 in a fast and professional manner.

Yup, my hubby used it. He had a degree classification of a 2:2 in Physics and they translated that to a 2.9 US GPA. Of course they took into account a few of his failed masters level classes (while in undergraduate) that apparently people in Britain don't drop/withdraw mid-way through the semester because there's no need (?) Otherwise I think his grade point would be a bit higher...
