Initial Evidence- Medical Examination

In my obsession to read and study everything before filing (who the heck wants an RFE), I have stumbled across something that is confusing and a bit annoying.

Under the general instructions for the I-485 there is an Initial Evidence Section. In Section 7 Medical Examination the directions state:

When required, submit a medical examination report on Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record.

Then right under that it says to submit it unless you are a refugee.

#8 says:

If you are a K-1 fiance who had a medical examination within the past year as required for the nonimmigrant fiance visa, you only need to submit a vaccination supplement, not the entire medical report...etc.

Ok...

So, Rob was a K-1 Applicant who had a medical examination already. He has a copy of his vaccination records.

Somewhere in my reading, (I can't find the section at the moment) it said the I-693 had to be filled out by a Civil Surgeon.

Do I just need to send in a copy of his vaccination records, or do we have to go to the Civil Surgeon to have them copy the records onto the I-693?

If anyone wants to read the directions- they are on page 4 of the I-485 instructions.

That's a good question. Some people only send in the DS 3025 (vaccination worksheet) and they get approved.

Others get an RFE for not having the I-693 signed and completed by a civil surgeon.

Some (like me) get an RFE because USCIS lost the medical from the K-1.

There are a ton of posts about this topic. It's also in the sticky at the top of this forum.

Thanks for the info. I've received a message on it, and will do some more research when I see what actual paperwork Rob has in his possession. It might be a waste to research without knowing what all he even has!!

The I-693 does "need" to be filled in by a CS.. he's the only one who can fill it in (except you can fill in part 1).

The I-693 is the medical. By only filling in certain portions of the I-693 (as mentioned in the I-693 instructions) it can just be a vaccination transcription.

As long as your medical is less than a year old, only a vaccination transcription would be required IF:

1. You know you need shots (i.e. your DS-3025 isn't complete)

2. You're not sure if you need shots

3. You know you don't need shots but you wanna cover your bases "just in case"

I was a 3.

Whether you get it done is up to you... if an RFE doesn't bother you then don't "waste" the money unless you get an RFE. if you wanna avoid an RFE if at all possible (like me) get it done anyway.

Remember it's not a full medical, it's JUST a vaccination transcription. Part 1, Part 2 (vaccination table) and Part 5. No new TB test is required. Some CS's try and convince people of this but the TB test is part of the medical and you're not having a medical so the TB requirements don't apply to you.
