I think it would be good if in the profile info you see when someone posts something .. where it says "Filed for", "Filing location" etc, it would be good if there's another option for "Filed for" (or Visa status or something like that) and "Current status".

For example, me.

I filed for a "K1" (or it could say "Visa: K1", my current status is "AOS Approved". If I was still in the K1 process "current status" would be K1.

I think this would benefit a lot of people and save a lot of time. That way I know immediately how the person entered so I don't wonder when they're asking AOS qns. I know what stage they're up to etc.

Opinions?

Completely agree :P But constantly checking peoples timelines when you just need to know what they're AOSing from, or what they're applying for (or from) is annoying. When calculating overstay and stuff timelines are obviously best :D

I put that info in my sig, because I want to help people know that it is possible to AOS from B-2 under CERTAIN circumstances (especially when our application was pending I wanted to find other B-2 adjusters), and I want to help people who are like "omg we just eloped and I found out I am pregnant and I want to stay here!" kind of thing. But more and more, I think it is a bad idea, because it leads people to think that adjusting from a B-2 is a valid immigration option. See this post for instance:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/283403-ready-to-file-aos/page__view__findpost__p__4298787

More and more I think my posting with this in my sig gives other people the wrong idea. I know what happened to us but I also suspect many VJ members suspect us of wrongdoing and resent it - in any case it leads to misinformation/misunderstanding.

That works well for K-1, but for people with AOS-other... I think specifying the visa might create more harm than good.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

I have disabled the ability to view signatures because I don't like scrolling for pages and pages through photos and other stuff that is (sorry) irrelevant to the process and the thread... so that's why I suggested this.. so I don't have to check the timelines, or go to someone's profile to find out info. I think it's a good idea because of K1's and actually your example.

You are right that some people resent people who AOS'd "the wrong way". It is a valid immigration option though, the problem is people thinking that's what they should do, as opposed to getting a "proper" visa. I never knew you were B2 AOS, typically it's irrelevant to me except when moving topics and replying to qns.. I get sick of seeing people posting $1010 as the fee for people such as yourself, because they too don't wanna bother checking how the person entered, then you get about 20 posts of "no it's not it's XXX" and the OP gets all confused 'cause half are saying one thing and half the other...

Anyone else like the idea? or dislike it?

There is something here we should do. The key is that any change has to be measured and well thought out as a lot of legacy profiles and internal systems use these fields.

Perhaps adding something more generic such as 'Entered US with:" which could have then have a pull down menu listing options such as K-1 visa, K-3 visa, CR-1/IR-1 visa, work visa, student visa, investor visa, visitor visa, visa waiver programme, Canadian (no visa), refugee, illegal/without inspection, not yet entered, etc. . Would that work or would it be too cumbersome?

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I like that. Then people would be less likely to be confused. So when I'm applying for K1 it would say "N/A" in entered with. Once I have my K1 and am in the US it would say: K1 in the entered with box "current status: as K1. Then once I apply for AOS I change it to AOS pending and so on and so forth.. I think that makes sense...

If you changed it completely, you could use a hook to automatically correctly update legacy systems, and hooks are really easy to write. That gives you the best of both worlds - the more flexible system in the forum + not having to change the rest immediately.

I would probably just create and / or modify the custom fields and run a series of php/mysql scipts I write for the conversion. Same thing as you said, just simpler for me to do.

This is still on my road map (soon?). I need to figure out proper scripts to convert old to new entries in a smart way.
