Hi everyone!

I need some advice to change my name on my GC and SSN.

All my ID has my maiden name except my japanese passport which I recently added husband lastname on it with my maiden name.

Since I am getting drivers license, I'd like to have his last name on it but to do so I think I have to change name to his before apply.

Is it ok to have several different name on each ID like one has my maiden name only, the other has his family name etc..?

Or do I need to change all of my maiden name to his name on both GC and SSN to stay out of trouble like when I apply drivers license?

How difficult to change name on GC?

Another question is, when I apply for renewal of my GC within 2 years, can I just change my name there without extra work rright now or do I still have to stick with my maiden name if I dont do certain paper work to change it??

Why did you not file AOS with your husbands last name... You would have got your green card in his last name and saved A LOT of trouble and extra expences.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

Wont let me edit but here, it will cost you an extra $370 to change your green card. Form I-90.

Your drivers licence SHOULD match your government ID, which in this case is your GC.. they MIGHT accept your passport as proof of name.. but usually (like the SSA) the DL needs to match USCIS records. They MIGHT let you change it just with the marriage certificate. You'll have to go in and ask.

You can have multiple names if you want, I don't know why you would want to though... it's very confusing. Your problem is your proof of work is your GC, it's in your maiden name. Then it doesn't match your SSN (which you also need to work).. it's just very confusing. I'm pretty sure you can change your SSN using your marriage certificate to your married name but you might also have issues because it doesn't match your USCIS records.

It will cost you to change your GC. Better option is to wait until ROC.

Another question is, when I apply for renewal of my GC within 2 years, can I just change my name there without extra work rright now or do I still have to stick with my maiden name if I dont do certain paper work to change it??

This would be the best option and save you $370.

**Edit - the point is obviously moot now for you, but for anyone else reading.. complete your AOS documents in the name you want to use otherwise it gets confusing like this...

I made this same mistake. My husband and I got legally married and immediately started my immigration paperwork but we kept this marriage hush-hush until we had our big traditional family wedding a few months later, since we were pretending to still be engaged I didn't change my name before filing, a big mistake because I didn't realize how much work it would be to change it to my married name now that my CR-1 visa has been approved and I am in the USA.

I have a question for anyone who can help. I filed everything in my maiden name, but at my interview the woman asked about my married name, I said I hadn't changed it yet but that I wanted to change to my married name. When I got my package with my passport and the envelope to bring to my POE the envelope/package to bring to the POE had both my married and maiden names on it but the visa printed in my passport has my maiden name.

Is there a way I can find out what name will be on my green card? And is there a way to change my name on my Green Card before it is made? My POE date was June 13 and I still haven't received anything, not even a welcome letter. I am about to go to the social security office tomorrow since thats another thing I haven't beard anything about. Any advice?

What's printed on the visa is what normally says on GC. Can't change it now, too late. DId you check at POE? Last resort - use maiden until ROC and then file I-751 with the married name - will save you $$$.

Thanks. I didn't check at POE, where I entered no one had done any immigration cases in a LONG time, they didn't really know what was going on, so I didn't want to ask them anything and have them mess up what they were working on. :S As it was they stamped my passport on my biographical page and not the visa page, this game me trouble the next time I crossed the border.
