OK so I have been reading a lot of old posts on VJ and from what I could see is that k-1's are eligible for a SSN. When you go to the local SSA office they will pull her info, using their I-94 and visa/passport, to check the SAVE database to authenticate their immigration status. We should wait at least 10 -14 days for the database to update with their info. So my nightmare is this...when I took my wife down to the local SSA office they ran her through SAVE and they even showed me the print out, it shows her entering the the country on the date she flew in, the POE and her visa status (K-1). Now these yahoo's are saying that they have to verify her documents with DHS! And could take up to 4 weeks! Can anyone tell me what the hell they are talking about? When I call DHS and SSA they all say the same thing call the other agency. I don't see the need to verify her documents further with DHS if she is in the SAVE database as being here on a valid K-1! Anyone got a clue what is going on with these knuckledraggers?

They said they had to verify with DHS for my wife as well. However, it still only took one week to get her initial card.

When she went back to change her name, again she was told that they needed to verify with DHS. That time it took just over 2 weeks.

She was told it would take 4-6 weeks both times.

I am just wondering as to why they feel the need to take this step? As far as I can see as long as she is in good standing with USCIS than SSA shouldn't have a problem. I know that they have an issue with issuing K-1's SSN because of the high fraud rate that they found, but still this seems like we are all getting caught in the middle of a inter federal agency turf war pissing contest.

I don't think they actually did any manual verification with DHS. I believe that process really does take 4-6 weeks. Who knows.

No she had the number right then and their. She told us that the system had already designated a number for her, but before they could release it they had to verify her documents with DHS.

Need to find out why they couldn't verify her status on the intital verification. Could be her DOB is incorrect or a misspelling of her name. Although one letter of her name can be incorrect and still be concidered verified. Bod Smith would be OK for Bob Smith.

From what I could see on the SAVE printout the clerk showed me everything looked fine. I asked the clerk was the problem was since I could clearly see that it appeared that she was in the database and it looked fine. The clerk said she had to verify her documents with DHS because although she was in the database the had to make sure her documents were OK. Which led me to say to her if the documents weren't legit they would have never let her in the country! This is why I am so confused as to why SSA feels the need to verify what DHS has already put in the system and had stamped her passport at the border.

The letter they gave us showing that we had indeed applied for a SSN says "Before we can issue you a Social Security number card, we must verify the document(s) you gave to us to show your Citizenship Alien with the Federal, State, or local in the United States that issued the document(s). This may take up to 4 weeks." Any idea's?
