Chinese passport renewal

My wife's passport will expire in March of 2011. We are planning a trip to China for lunar new year in February, and I wanted to ask if anyone knows what the procedure will be for her to renew her passport while in China? Can it be completed in one week (while we are there)? Will she encounter any problems? Should we have her name updated to show our marriage? And if so, will this be a problem during the return flight if her name is changed on passport vs. ticketing information?

I know we can go to Houston and get this done in person before we go, but I do not have time off work to perform this.

Depends on how long you'll be in China as passport offices generally shut down for Chinese holidays. My wife's niece recently got a new passport and she says it takes 20 days, so add the holidays to the 20. Through the Chinese Consulate in Houston, you apply in person and then pick up the new passport in person thirty days later. In our case, we gave a friend a prepaid Priority Mail envelope and he picked up the passport for us and mailed it.

Thanks pushbrk for the information. We will not be in China long enough for renewal then... Also do not want to have to rush to Houston to renew if not needed for this trip.

I need clarification please: Am I correct in thinking that we will encounter no obstacles based on passport or green card, IF we travel before her current passport expires, and with her current conditional green card? There will be about 6 weeks validity remaining on her passport when we return. Is this an issue, or is it adequate.

If adequate, we can travel to Houston later this year to renew instead of rushing there now...

Is this correct? Or do I need to go to Houston now???

As long as the passport hasn't expired before you return to the USA, you'll be fine. I don't know if the renewal process is different for an expired passport but with six weeks to spare you can avoid finding out.
