Hi all,

since I'll get married pretty soon, I really would like to have a clearer picture of the AOS process once I'll have to start it, so reading through the line I kindly ask anybody, who has been already through the process, some questions that are still counfusing me:

1) after the marriage if you are a NON US citizen girl, when you filled out the forms for AOS process

you must put already as "family name" the lastname of your husband that you just married or you have to

keep mentioning your maiden name?

2) for your experience, NON US girls, who just got married in US,

is better to keep in all forms, cards and whatever your maiden name or take your husband name?

Whats the difference?

3) is it better ask for the AP at the same time of AOS, although at that time you are not

planning to leave US, or later only in case you really need to leave US? What kind of docs

must be attached to Form I-131?Any personal suggestion?

4) When you get Visa K1 at the US Consulate in your native country, u get also the medical exams,

did you take with you the X-RAY made by the US doctors when you go to the US to marry and

to live? Are they going to need it for the AOS process or at the custom when you come from

your native country?

Thaanks so much to anybody who can make more clear my above points!!!!!!

Greetings!

1. last name will be your new family name.( your husbands family name)

2. some kept their names, but then,Would it be nice if you use your husbands name? Make him proud that you use it and its also one of the strongest evidence of your relationship too.

3.Well, it will only take more or less 5 months to have the greencard , (as long as you apply AOS right away)so why apply?

4. To be honest, they will ask us to bring the X ray results to the United States but it was never been asked at the airport or any offices here. ( but who knows? might as well follow what they say to be in the safer side)

AOS timelines vary widely depending on the district office that processes it. Some offices may only take 5 months while others take well over a year and some close to 2 years. Look at the AOS timelines for those using the same district office.

Whether you choose to take your husbands last name is totally up to you. If you decide to take his name, you should use it on all future applications. In that case, you will put your maiden name in the box for "other names used".

Hi,

I will also get married in the US very soon. You should definately take your husbands last name. Usually in the US most woman take their maiden name as middlename. I will do this as well. So it is not gone and you still have it on your papers.

Good luck.

Hi Milka,

Thanks for giving me this idea, are you really sure that u can u use as your middlename your maiden lastname if you decide to take your husbands last name?Because that would be nice, on the other hand

since i have noticed that you are going to leave to the US more less the same time I'll be leaving, can

I ask you kindly if you'll betaking as carryon luggage the docs, , the xray from the US consulate from Germany without any problem?

I know that it depends on the airline company by I think that almost all the airline companies should

Hey!! Just a suggestion about your name.... If you want to keep your maiden name you can or you can also hyphenate it so your name would look like this.....firstname maidenname-husband'sname. As a female who grew up in the US women do all different things to their names. You can do what ever you want there is no right or wrong. As far as the family name on the form...I think that you would put whatever your last name is going to be. We did not file for AP with our AOS because we didn't want to spend even more money. If we don't get our AOS approved before my husband wants to leave the country we will file a few months in advance. If you want it for emergencies than apply with AOS but this is your own personal preference. The x-ray needs to be with you when you go through customs when you enter the country. I am not sure if you need this for the AOS. I didn't think that you did so my husband accidently threw his away so I hope we don't need it!! He said the embassy told him that he only needed it at the border.

Good Luck
