misplaced green card

I applied for removal of conditions on my green card and received the one year extension letter. Recently I moved and in the process have misplaced my (already expired) green card.

Two questions:

1. Will I ever need the expired green card in the future? What are the consequences? Should I start a thorough search in my house?

2. If I wish to travel, notably Canada, do I need to present the expired green card along with the extension letter or is the letter enough? I think I know the answer, but just checking with my more experienced fellow VJ-ers.

Thanks a lot!

You need your GC for biometrics, and if you need a passport stamp, then you should have it on you. I would recommend not traveling to Canada without the GC. They need to see some photo ID that shows you are a GC holder and then extension letter is not going to cut it.

If you think you just lost it among your stuff, then the best thing to do is search for it and find it. Else, you just need to wait for the approval and the 10 year GC to travel.

Other than that, you do not need your expired GC.

Thanks a lot everybody. In the meantime, I found it! I just raked my mind to figure out where I could have put it safely for the move.

By the way, I had my biometrics on September 10. At that time, my GC was still missing in action. However, according to the ASC Appointment Notice: "You must bring photo identification. Naturalization applicants must bring their Alien Registration Card. All other applicants must bring a passport, driver's license, national ID, military ID, or State-issued photo ID." Not being a naturalization applicant, there was no mention of having to bring the green card, which is why I did not panic. I brought my passport and drivers license. The security guard asked for my green card and I explained that I misplaced it and that according to the ASC notice, a passport should be enough. He agreed that is correct, but cautioned me that according to the law, I should be carrying my GC on me all the time. He let me keep my biometrics appointment nonetheless. So the reason you need your GC for biometrics is not because the notice says so.

Hi, v333k, I don't believe the OP would NEED the expired green card for biometrics. The biometric letter and any government issued id is what they want to see. I used my passport for my biometrics. I know the OP already has his biometrics done but just for future reference for other applicants, the green card is not the only acceptable ID for the biometrics appointment so it's not necessarily needed..

That's very true - however, my experience has led me to make such a statement. My biometrics for ROC, the officer requested to see my GC and only the GC. Same when I applied for re-entry permit (I guess this one is a bit different).

But thanks for the stating that and clarifying that it is not an absolute must!

Cheers!
