What nationality/language group is your NON-USC mostly mistaken for?

Not really a nationality but the generic Hispanic language group.

In the retail store she works in many automatically talk to her in Spanish.

She tells me that pisses her off, I AM NOT SPANISH I AM THAI!

I say, "calmate, cariño."

ooooh this is hot button with me  because i have, how to put nicely...? nether-region-circular-cavity neighbors (just one set of racist jerks without lives who like to stir the pot) who like to refer to my husband as 'that Iraqi man' and have accused him of many things that aren't even possible.

some days i hate people {sigh}

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

With the US as the #1 attraction for foreign immigrants,

it's a wonder how unsophisticated we are as a group.

My first wife was Japanese; one time at the supermarket

I overheard a grandmotherly like lady ask her regarding

My husband is always asked if he is French or people assume he's French. It's the Egyptian accent with the "zh" sound as in "zhis" or "zhat". He couldn't possibly be Arab because Arab accents don't have those sounds. Of course, he doesn't have a typical "Arab" look so I guess I understand the confusion.

I went to the American University of Beirut (as an exchange student for my junior year)

and I knew an Egyptian guy that sounded like Mary Poppins.

I asked him where he studied his English and he admitted to having a British nanny.

oh i have weird sense of humor at times... would have been hard not to say (while looking wildly around and grabbing the girls closely) Shhh! no i stole them!! :P

my husband also has that "vine" when saying "wine" though that is fading and his "z" is pretty much gone now. when we first began speaking ages ago he sounded like a cross between a frenchman who was going to interrogate me using german techniques

one of his friends tried to fool me once ... yeah, right! not even in the beginning when we had only spoken couple times could i be fooled! i knew my man!

i think he looks more native american because he could pass for one of my male relatives

My wife is Thai, and was taken once by a Thai waitress at a Thai restaurant as being Vietnamese. She was quite offended. I giggled.

A friend of mine is married to an American-born Latina from So Cal. She is often taken for Southeast Asian. (reverse of the OP). She's cool with it. Her eyes/cheekbones do suggest Asian ancestry although she has none.

It's all good. I love the American melting pot.

I, the non-USC, am often mistaken for a Mexican.

Habla Espanol? No, senor.

One drunk black dude at Port Authority tried to convince me that I was a Jamaican. Truly.

I'm the USC and people sometimes mistake me for European (or midwestern).

I seem to have buried any Noo-Yawk accent through frequent contact with foreigners

over the years as I have moderated my accent to be a clearly understandable one.

Although I was born near NYC and lived there for most of my adult life (excluding travel),

most people who ask me where I'm from register surprise when I say New York.
