Hi to all,

I'm about to go to the US for an internship program. I'll have a J1 visa. I want to know what are the conditions in which the 2 year rule applies! I'm going to the US for about 6 months; I heard that for stays under 6 months the rule doesn't apply, is it true? just to know if a can only stay for 5 month and 29 days without bumping into that rule.

also is it possible to extend the j1 visa with a turist visa? I explain: after I finish my internship I would like to take a week or two to travel around the US.

thank you in advance!

The 2-year rule applies no matter how short your stay was. Mine was a 3-mo short-term scholar J1 visa and the 2-year rule still applied. It all depends a lot on where you got your funding (directly from the US; from international organizations receiving US funds; no US funding at all; home government funding, etc.) and if the skill set is critical in your home country (there's a list. If your skill set/field is listed, the 2-year rule applies).

If the 2-year rule applies to you, it would say so on your J1 visa and your DS-2019. If there is nothing written on those two, then the 2-year rule does not apply to you.
