I have never been to the Ozarks.... but since you brought them up, I wonder how they stacked up in these scholastic findings?

Apparently better than others....which isn't saying much, doesn't seem anyone is getting their tax dollars worth.

Yeah, thats the problem... not enough bed time stories.

If we just had bed time stories we could turn the corner.

Gee, I sense some sarcasm.

Fact - children who are read to from an early age do better in school. Some children don't even know how to hold a book when they enter kindergarten.

And btw, I don't appreciate how you seem to try to twist everything I say into some airy-fairy sounding nonsense simply because you've placed me in the liberal box. My comment is legit - it's not about cuddling and bedtime stories.

I was read to a lot by my mom when I was a kid, or so she tells me. I wish there was a way to verify this stuff.

Oh, and +1.

Of course my comment had some sarcasm in it but please don't take it personal... or too serious. (not that I have to add that) :)

If there is a correlation between parents who read to their child and those children getting better grades I would speculate it goes beyond "reading" and it has more to do with this question?

Q: What type of parent takes the time to read to their child? Perhaps the same parent who would later tend to be involved in their kids educational life, the same type parent who would put home work first and TV and play second.... in other words parents who actually value Education.

- With this said, a single parent is the least able to be this kind of parent due to the demands and human limitation colliding. (Blacks have a 72% unwed birthrate now)

Has anyone seen even one study which shows Middle class Black children were read to less often than were Poor White kids..... if not, why would we be supposing Blacks don't like to read to their kids?

The stronger the family unit... the greater the chances of success for the child.

I agree with the part about parents who read to their children are more likely to be invovled in and place value on their education in general.

But whether reading to one's kids and academic performance have a direct cause/effect relationship or not, my conjecture about black parents not reading to their kids as frequently as white parents comes from the fact that black children are underperforming in school. I suppose it could be the case that black parents read to their kids just as much, but are otherwise not involved and are unable to motivate their kids, but I don't think so - like you said, these things go hand in hand. (however, it does make sense to me that being able to sit and enjoy a book at an early age requires skills that help prepare a child for future success in the classroom)

Bottom line, what I'm trying to get at, is that there is some behavioral force at work. There is something that black parents are not doing (and should be) that is causing these disparities, rather than something inherently inferior about the intelligence of black children.

I think where we differ is that I think that even if we cannot address the larger problems, like what you call the breakdown of the family, simple things that encourage parental involvement in learning such as reading to your kids can have an impact.

We know Black kids can at least perform much better because they have done so in the past and currently do in a few places.

Can anyone believe decades ago Black children were read to more often?
