Did any of you get a life insurance shortly after you immigrated? I put "life" in bold so it wouldn't be confused with a health insurance.

I got here on a CR-I and am covered through Tricare for any medical needs just fine. Now I want to get a life insurance too.

When I was here visiting, we tried to get the ball rolling but USAA refused to insure me until AFTER the medical exam when they found out I wasn't a resident at that time. Okay, I get that. Didn't know I can't get life insurance if I don't have a green card yet. Well they were stupid anyway cause they have all my info since we also bank through them. They should have known that I was neither a citizen nor a GC holder at that time.

Now we applied to Zander Ins. and they had a question in their application that was asking for citizenship or type of visa. So I entered "CR-I". Got an email back saying they can't find a company that would insure me because I'm not a citizen and don't have a green card.

#######?

Ok, I didn't get the actual card in the mail yet but I was kind of expecting them to know that CR-I means I'm an immigrant. Since the question is in the application and all...

I can get life insurance, right? As a conditional resident.

Please tell me that the pre-screening team is just dumb....

None of this should be an issue for you, as a CR1 visa holder, you should be a permanent legal resident (aka 'have a green card').

Could be an issue if you put "I" (the letter i) instead of "1" (the numeral), though. There is no CR-I visa, but there is CR-1 (which is what you have).

(FTR, I got health & life insurance for my then-fiance through work, as my 'designated domestic partner', and he was a K-1 visa holder at the time. Granted, everyone does insurance differently, so... yeah.)

I think I even put CR-1 in there. But am not sure.

My husband left a message on their machine to call him back. I really want him to talk to them cause I might say something weird. or stupid. ^^

We will know tomorrow but that email just got my blood boiling for some reason.

Thanks for the input though. Good to know that it worked for somebody who was not a resident at that time back then.

The bank and the insurance company are two separate companies. Even with the same name. They would not share information about your status.

Most people have no experience with immigration. They do not know what a CR1 , B2, or K1 visa means. They are likely looking for information such as: Visitor, Student, Work, etc.

I shouldn't be surprised by now should I? ^^

Yeah I just don't get how they can ask for the type of visa and then say nah, not possible without even trying to find out what it means...

That's just beyond me.

When my husband was on the yearly 2-week training, they were getting life insurance. Someone (not even my husband) completed form for me and put me down as a US citizen when I still had the GC. You can imagine all the hoops I had to jump to get them to change it to PR. Changed it to citizen now.
