Hey everyone. I'm here in LA on a CR-1 immigrant visa (from Vancouver). I checked off the box in my DS-230 that says that I want to receive my SSN automatically upon entering the States. It's been a month and I still don't have my SSN. The paper I got from the Consulate General says that if you don't get your SSN after 3 weeks then call this 1-800 number. So I called the number and it was like an SSN office call centre and they said I should go to my local SSN office. So I went with my husband the next day (this was last week)and they said I need my green card to apply for SSN!! The green card arrives within 4 months of entering the States... the SSN is given right away.. so I applied for another SSN number.. should take two weeks (which is what the consulate general paper says about applying for new SSNs)but at the office they said it will take about 4 weeks. Without a SSN I cannot apply to an insurance company for medical and dental insurance... and my medication and birth control pills will run out in about a month. I have no idea what to do... should I call USCIS? Did anyone have problems with receiving their SSN like this?

Thanks! :)

That little box on the DS-230 is notoriously unreliable. You did the right thing going to the SSN office. Mine took about 7 business days to arrive.

They say 4 weeks to be on the VERY safe side.

Nothing USCIS can do, this is not their domain. Just wait it out for the SSN card

Good luck

1. The visa in your passport with the admitted stamp IS your temporary green card - point that out to SSA personnel.

Hi,

A question for all the knowledgable people out there. I got my greencard yesterday but it was in my maiden name. They went by my passport. So any suggestions what to do next? I'm wondering if my SSN will be in my maiden name as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Pay up the $420 and file I-90 OR wait until removal of conditions time (if applicable) or until naturalization time.

Why didn't you change your passport once you got married?

Link to the I90, the fee is expensive which is why you should have changed your passport before you went for the interview.

Good luck

awe Jadenjewel....that seriously sucks.

Unfortuantely you really only have to choices do the i-90 and pay an arm to change the name....Or wait till removal of conditions and just use your maiden name. I think your can still use your marriage certificate to get your ssn in your married name, but you will have to bring your marriage certificate whenever you travel to show you have both name.

Its up to you really, you could just have everything in your maiden name till removal of conditions although If you like your married name...you might want to be using it.

If it were me I would pay the fee to change it but I HATE my maiden name LOL

If we didn't change her name prior to the CR-1 interview and we plan on doing it at Removal of Conditions in 2 years, do we change her name in her passport first, just prior to applying for RoC?

Do we then wait until her ten year card arrives before going to the SSA and changing her name there?

Thanks!
