Texas has never needed a bailout ever. (except when the U.S. brought us into the union)

See, normally the definition of the words "never" and "ever" means, like, "never" and "ever". No "excepts" allowed.

But in your case, we'll have to make an exception, seeing as how you're a cuddly Socialist and all.

While it is not unique to Texas, the budget issues will be kicked downstream (i.e. burden the counties some more) and down the road (i.e. do nothing to fix the actual source issues that have state legislators scrambling to balance their budgets). Neither of the approaches is reflective of fiscal conservatism that the powers claim to be guided by.

Ah, the ignorance of those who know nothing....

You look at Federal mandates that add to the budget...

You look at the fact that consumer sales were down for several months at a time....

You look at the fact that the housing market went down....

Yeah, you're going to have a loss of money and a budget defecit and you need to make some changes.

The idiot in Dallas who wrote this about California also ignores the fact that we have a bi-annual state legislature. They don't meet every year, so our budget is done on a bi-annual basis. It will be addressed in the upcoming session and fixed in the upcome session. So people who know nothing about how our state government works and who have no idea that California had to make mass changes to get their budget in line, need to shut the hell up.

Texas will never need to be bailed out so don't get your hopes up. Texas has never needed a bailout ever. (except when the U.S. brought us into the union) Texas will also never secede. We did that once but we were defeated in a war and forced to come back. We decided since we have to be part of the U.S. then we might as well rule it and make everyones life happy as can be.

Texas Legislature appropriated $14.4 billion of the stimulus money for fiscal 2009, 2010 and 2011. Five state agencies account for 93% of those appropriations: Texas Education Agency, Health and Human Services Commission, Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, and the Texas Workforce Commission.

The federal government is also sending money directly to local governments and other institutions, such a military bases, in Texas.

The difference is Texas can't have a unbalanced budget. They are by state constitution allowed to have a balanced budget only. It is often that what the budget wants and what the revenues are do not match. That means we get to have the yearly fun of the state politicians going back and forth and taking turns talking and then vote on a balanced budget. Usually the Socialists have been a bigger voice so the talking and whining goes back and forth more but this year the GOP has the largest majority in history but I am sure they will whine just as much.

Most people don't know but they can't by law skimp on education funding. A few other departments can't be hit too hard. The state also has a pay as you go law. They are not allowed to go into any kind of debt so that means pretty much that some highways will be scaled back. Some wetlands restoration will be left for another day and so on. Also they can raise taxes but that will help next years budget maybe. I am sure there are many states that have a balanced budget constitution though so most here understands all this.

Actually, California has a balanced budget ammendment too. However, we actually have state taxes, so we don't have to make huge cuts to things like.... education. Great thing to cut

Texas has state taxes as well. It's called a sales tax. We don't punish individuals for trying to just make a living. Been there, done that. It sucks paying a state out of yur income, when you get nothing in return. Well, except for Somali immigrants killing, raping, and committing other crimes all while living off the taxpayers dime.......but that's Minnesota for you I suppose...

Of course the idea that government needs to spend spend spend is absurd as anything else as well.

Yes, it does suck to pay a state taxes out of your paycheck to get nothing in return. Lucky for me, I enjoy things like roads and schools that aren't falling apart, emergency services, parks, beaches, stuff like that. But you keep enjoying no state income tax when your state is in another budget crisis and has to start cutting programs.

psssst, Texas has the best roads in the country. Though Cali is a close 2nd..... our emergency services are top notch, etc. as well. but you keep thinking otherwise.

Your state had to make deep cuts and raise fees out the #######, so don't forget that either....

Thats because we actually offer citizens here services. Our beaches aren't laden with oil rigs and water moccasins, and our schools actually teach science, not science fiction versions of science....

Well, sorta. It's more Gaia worship, turning all the kids into eco-terrorists.
