This is the metric I'm referring to. See the crime index. It's found on http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/nj/town_name/crime/ (replace town_name with actual town name).

Yeah it's tricky, I had to do it a certain way to get the number. First I went to my state, then zoomed in to click my city, then it showed me a number. Then it showed my area broken up into different parts.

I used the drill down feature in the map and went as far down as I could without paying.

It's using Census data, which is 10 years old at this point. 2010 data isn't available for general use yet.
