Hi everyone,

My mother changed status from Permanent resident to US Citizen in 2008,

and she petitioned me for a visa and I had my interview early September

2010. They did not give me an immigration visa, but asked for proof of my

mother's citizenship. This had already been given to the NVC in the US,

but we complied with them anyway, and it was sent and arrived the Embassy

in Montreal on September 13, 2010. The consular said that after the proof

of citizenship was recieved it would take within a month for them to send

my passport back with the visa. It is now November, 2010, and I have not

heard from them since. We have written emails to the US Embassy at

Montreal to find the status of the case but they do not reply (even past 4

weeks after the email has been sent). And you can't contact them through

phone either, because they only take questions by e-mail or mail. I don't

understand why it is taking so long and why they are keeping me without my

passport for so long? I need it as I am also under a student visa in

Canada. Is there another way to contact these people to know why they are

delaying things so much?

Any help or suggestions appreciated,

Ed

Montreal is slow. There isn't much you can do.

If you want your passport back, you can email them with "PASSPORT RETURN" in the subject and they will send it back promptly.

---

If you have sent your passport to the IV unit and need it returned before a visa can be issued, please send a separate message to Montreal-IV-DV@state.govwith the subject line "Passport return." In the text of your message, please list your full name, your IV case number, the date on which you mailed your passport, and the address to which you would like your passport mailed.

If I do this, what are the negative consequences with respect to the immigration visa? I imagine it will be delayed further? interviewed again?

They need to have your passport in order to issue the visa. If you ask them to return it, then you would need to send it back again and you'd be at the end of the long lineup again.

If I were you, I'd continue to wait if you can... You can also try faxing them if email didn't work. 514-398-9748 and address it to "IV Unit Supervisor".

We sent my wife and son's passports in on November 17th or so. We are terrified that it could take as long for us as it did for you. We desperately want to be together for Christmas.

Good news. We got through to a supervisor at the consulate and he is helping to get our case through faster. Here is a full post on the details of our story:
